FINGER-NAIL ORNAMENT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE L. F. Nuss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Finger-Nail Ornaments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the general class of jewelry and more especially to ornaments used for the purpose of beautifying the hands.

The object of the present invention is to provide an ornament which may be secured to the end of the finger nails for the purpose of adding to the attractiveness thereof,

the said ornament being provided with suitable means for securing the same to the nail and may also be provided upon its face with a design or monogram, thereby adding to its attractiveness.

A further object is to provide an ornament of the above class with means by which it may be secured to the finger nails in a manner as to prevent of its accidentally becoming lost, and at the same time to permit of its removal and application when desired. With these and other objects in view the invention consists of a plate preferably in the form of a crescent, which is adapted to conform to the shape of the end of the finger nail, the said plate being provided with means for engaging the end of the finger nail and with means for securing the said plate to the nail, this means consisting of a pair of flexible clips, which are adapted to be passed through an opening formed in the end of the finger nail and to be bent laterally thereunder.

Fig. 6 is an edge view thereof, illustrating by dotted lines the position of the securing members when the ornament is in position upon the nail.

Fig. 7 is a view illustrating the position of the opening formed in the nail.

In the form of the invention shown, there is provided a plate 10, preferably formed of thin metal, which may be gold, silver,

platinum or any other ornamental or attractive metal. This plate is curved to conform to the transverse curvature of the nail and has its outer edge 11 of such' curvature to, conform to the outer end of the finger nail. The inner edge 12 may be fluted as shown, or if desired may be provided with a curve which might extend downwardly and cover the entire surface of the nail, or it may be curved to form a crescent as shown in the modified form illustrated in Fig. 5.

The edge 11 of the plate is provided upon its under surface with a crescent shaped portion 13, which is of substantially the same thickness as plate 10, this portion 13 being slightly spaced from plate 10 so as to provide a pocket for the reception of the end of the nail.

Portion 13 is slitted as at 14, so as to form a spring clip 15, which has its spring end 16 bent inwardly so as to engage an opening 17 provided in the finger nail.

When it is desired to apply the ornament to the nail it is only necessary to slip the same over the end of the nail, the spring tongue 15 engaging the opening 17 and securing the ornament in position. When it is desired to remove the device it is only necessary to insert some sharp instrument, for example, a pin, beneath the edge of the spring tongue and its end 16 will disengage from the nail opening.

In the modifications shown in Figs. 5 and 6, there is provided a crescent shaped plate 18 which has its outer edge 19 shaped to conform to the outer edge of the finger nail and is curved to conform to the transverse curvature of the nail. For thepurpose of securing this plate in position upon the nail, thereis provided upon its under face a pair of oppositely located flexible clips 20, which are normally extended at right angles through the face of the plate and are adapted to pass through the finger nail opening and to be bent laterally in opposite directions beneath the under surface of the finger nail. As these clips 20 are formed of flem'- W ble metal they may be easily and quickly straightened to permit of the removal of the ornament.

w The device is susceptible of various changes in the form and proportion, and the right is reserved to make such changes.

Having described the invention, What is claimed is: V

1. A finger ornament comprising a thin metal plate and a spring tongue carried by said plate "and for engagement with an open ing in the finger nail to secure the plate to the nail.

2. A finger ornament comprising a'metal plate shaped to cover a portion of the upper surface I of the finger nail, a second plate secured to and spaced from said first mentioned plate to define a pocket for the reception of the finger nail, the closed end of said pocket entirely covering the outer edge of the nail and spring actuated means formed on said second plate for engagement With the finger nail. v a
