Application September 4, 1956, Serial No. 607,708
3 Claims. (Cl. 132-46) This invention relates to an ornamental device to be worn in a ladys hair to hold the hair in a style popularly known as a pony tail. The device provides a central opening through which the long strands of hair extend to form the pony tail as well as providing a decorative flexible cone shaped support which lies against the back of the head of the wearer and confines any short hair strands to preserve a neat appearance.
An important object of my invention is to provide a device of this type which may be cut from a flat sheet of material and which provides an access slot to the central opening while in flat form, the slot being closed after the long hair strands are in place in the central opening to provide a generally cone shaped device. Other and more detailed objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a preferred form of the device in place on the head of a wearer.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the device in flat form, showing the access slot leading to the central opening.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the same device showing the access slot closed to cause the device to assume a generally conical shape.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the lines 44 as shown in Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings, the disk member generally designated is cut or otherwise formed of fiat material such as, for example, leather, metal or plastic material. The member 10 has a central opening 11 and is provided with side edges 12 and 13 which define the sides of an entrance slot 14 communicating with the central opening 11. The entrance slot 14 is angular in shape, and the side edges 12 and 13 converge toward the central opening 11. The outer edge 15 of the member 10 is preferably soalloped or formed with a petal design as shown rather than having a continuous circular rim. This provides desirable flexibility and resiliency which otherwise would not be achieved. The flexibility as well as the ornamental appearance is further improved by the provision of cut-out portions 16 in the various petal elements 17.
*nited States Patent 0 ice When the side edges 12 and 13 are brought into overlapping position as shown in Figures 3 and 4 the entrance slot 14 is eliminated, and the member 10 takes on the shape of a cone. Snap fastener elements 18 and 19 are provided for holding the edges 12 and 13 in overlapping relationship. In use, the member 10 is placed adjacent the back of the head of the wearer and the long strands of hair which are to form the pony tail are passed inwardly through the access slot 14 to the central opening 11. The edges 12 and 13 are then placed in overlapping relationship and the snap fastener elements 18 and 19 are secured, to hold the member 10 in a conical shape. In this position the member conforms closely to the shape of the back of the head and this feature is enhanced by the resilience and flexibility provided by the petal shaped elements 17 and the ornamental cut-out 16. Relatively short strands of hair near the back of the head of the wearer are resiliently but firmly held by the member 10.
Having fully described my invention, it is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the details herein set forth, but my invention is of the full scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described for holding ladies hair in a pony tail style, the improvement comprising: a generally disk shaped member formed of fiat material and having a hair strand receiving opening, the member also having edges defining an entrance slot communicating with the central opening, the entrance slot being angular in shape with the side edges converging toward the central opening, the side edges being capable of being brought into overlapping relationship to eliminate the entrance slot and to cause the member to assume a conical shape, and releasable fastener means to maintain the side edges in overlapping relationship.
2. The device set forth in claim 1 wherein the said member has an irregular outer periphery to provide flexibility and resilience for conforming to the shape of the back of the head of a wearer.
3. The device set forth in claim 2 wherein cut out portions are provided to increase the flexibility of the periphery of said member.
