Description

y 1956 D. H. APPLEGATE 2,747,195
I HAT Filed Aug. 20, 1953 Dorothy HApp/egafe IN VEN TOR.
BY MW United States Patent This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in hats, particularly ladies hats, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a simple, highly attractive hat which may be conveniently and comfortably sustained in position on the head and which employs in its construction a resilient sustaining member, the latter being adapted for interchangeable use with a plurality of hat bodies so that the hat assumes convertible characteristics when considered in terms of a plurality of different hat bodies and a common resilient V sustaining member which may be used selectively and interchangeably therewith.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its efficient operation, in its highly pleasing appearance and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
' Figure l is a perspective view of the invention in use;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the resilient sustaining member used in the invention;
Figure 3 is a rear perspective view of the hat body, the closure of the pocket being in its open position, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line 44 in Figure 1.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the hat is designated generally by the reference character and embodies in its construction a suitable hat body 12 including an elongated, varcuate body member 14 which aifords therein an elongated pocket 16 for an elongated arcuate sustaining member or insert 18 of resilient material.
The body member 14 is provided at one end of the pocket 16 with anentrance opening 20 and this opening is equipped with any type of a conventional closure, such as for example, fastener elements 22.
When the hat is to be worn, the sustaining member or insert 18 is passed longitudinally through the entrance opening 20 into the pocket 16 on the body member 14 and after the closure 22 is fastened, the entire hat may be positioned on the head, it being frictionally sustained in position thereon by the resiliency of the member 18.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that by employing a plurality of different hat bodies 12, each including the pocket forming member 14, the same sustaining member 18 may be employed selectively with the various hat bodies. Moreover, when the sustaining member 18 is removed from the pocket 16, the body of the hat may be conveniently cleaned, pressed or otherwise kept in proper shape.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the inven tion as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A hat comprising an elongated arcuate body portion having a forward and rear edge formed of two overlying elongated pieces of arcuate material having ends and forward and rear edges generally conforming to the central vertical cross-sectional shape of a wearers head for positioning thereon, said material being secured together at one end and the forward and rear edges thereby forming a pocket therebetween having an access opening at the other end of the material, a generally forwardly and upwardly extending visor portion integrally formed with the forward edge of the body portion, an elongated arcuate member of resilient material removably positioned in said pocket through the access opening in said pocket, and a plurality of closure fasteners detaehably securing the edges of the opening in said pocket together for retaining the resilient member in said pocket, said resilient member being substantially U-shaped and generally conforming to the central vertical cross-sectional shape of a wearers head for gripping and fitting over the head of a wearer in substantially a central vertical position.
