4 Claims.

This invention relates to an improvement in combs of the type generally used by women in ornamenting and keeping their hair in place.

The principal object of this invention is to provide in such a comb a mechanism for quickly and firmly grip-ping or catching it to the hair of the user.

Another object is to make such addition by the use of simple and economical parts that may be used to attach or detach a comb with equal facility.

Still another object is to incorporate such feature in a comb without adding materially to the weight or bulk of the comb and without detracting from its conventional appearance.

Other objects will appear from the description which follows.

This invention is described in the accompanying drawing in which:

Figure 1 is a iront elevational view showing the comb with its movable parts not in hair gripping position.

Figure 2 is a rear elevational view showing the comb with its movable parts in hair gripping position.

Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the movable bar only.

Figure 4 is an enlarged front elevational view of one of the serrated teeth.

Figure 5 is a bottom view of the casing enclosing the top rear surface of the comb.

Referring to the drawings the comb has for its basic structure the conventional bar I from which depend teeth 2, and it may be made of plastic, rubber or any other material employed for combs. While teeth 2 are shown in open form they may be of any desired style, although it is desirable to have them of a width suflicient to permit serrated teeth 5 to come into registry with them and be concealed behind them. Surrounding the rear surface of bar I is casing 9 which is provided with tabs l l to clasp it firmly to bar I with space between them for movable bar 4. Permitted to move within such space a limited distance laterally, i. e., along the length of bar I, is movable bar 4 from which serrated teeth 5 depend. Slide- ,able on the front surface of bar I is button I which is secured to movable bar 4 by a shank which may move in slot 8 located off center in bar I. Slots Ill provided in casing 9 together with slot 8 limit the lateral movement of movable bar 4 and permit serrated teeth 5 in one position to be in registry with teeth 2 and in another position to close openings 3 between teeth 2. By making the lengths of slots l0 and 8 approximately 2 equal to the width of a tooth 2, this may be readily accomplished.

While metal lends itself readily to the forming of casing 9, movable bar 4, and serrated teeth 5, any other suitable material may be used.

When, as shown in Figure l, the comb is placed in the hair of the user, there is no interference from serrated teeth 5 and the hair can pass free- 1y into the openings 3 between teeth 2 as with ordinary combs. By moving button '5 to the position shown in Figure 2, serrated teeth 5 close openings 3. In a position short of this extreme, serrations 6 on the edges of teeth 5 will engage with hair in such openings 3. The hooked ends I2 of serrated teeth 5 assist in holding the hair. When so engaged the comb will be held firmly in place and will not accidentally become dislodged. To remove the comb, button I is moved to its other extreme position as shown in Figure 1 and the comb may be freely withdrawn.

Various modifications may be made in the shape and appearance of this comb and in its teeth and the associated movable bar and it is not intended by the description of a preferred form to limit the scope of this invention. For example, the number, length and shape of the serrated teeth may be varied from that shown; the means of securing and moving the movable bar otherwise provided for; and similar departures made from the illustration given without exceeding the scope of the invention.

What I claim is:

1. A comb comprising a bar having a lateral opening centrally located therein and having a plurality of teeth projecting downwardly from such bar; a casing attached to such bar forming a space between the casing and such bar; a shorter bar located in such space, movable laterally within the space so formed and provided with an operating button projecting through the lateral opening in the longer bar; and serrated edged teeth projecting downwardly from the shorter bar below the lower edge of the longer bar.

A comb comprising a bar having a lateral opening centrally located therein and having a plurality of teeth projecting downwardly from such bar; a casing attached to such bar forming a space between the casing and such bar; a shorter bar movable laterally a distance approximately the width of a tooth of the longer bar within the space so formed and provided with an operating button projecting through the lateral opening in the longer bar; and serrated edged teeth projecting downwardly from the shorter bar below the lower edge of the longer bar.

A comb comprising a bar having a lateral opening centrally located therein and having a plurality of teeth projecting downwardly from such bar; a casing attached to such bar forming a space between the casing and such bar; a shorter bar movable laterally a distance approximately the width of a tooth of the longer bar within the space so formed and provided with an operating button projecting through the lateral opening in the longer bar; and having teeth projecting downwardly from the shorter bar, said teeth extending below the lower edge of the longer bar, each tooth being provided with serrations along one edge adjacent the opening between the teeth of the longer bar below the lower edge of the longer bar.

A comb comprising a bar having a lateral opening centrally located therein and having a plurality of teeth projecting downwardly from such bar; a casing attached to such bar forming a space between the casing and such bar; a shorter bar movable laterally a distance approximately the width of a tooth of the longer bar within the space so formed and provided with an operating button projecting through the lateral opening in the longer bar; and having teeth projecting downwardly from the shorter bar, said teeth extending below the lower edge of the longer bar, each tooth having a curved hook-like end and having serrations along that tooth edge lying on the side toward which such end curves below the lower edge of the longer bar.
