Description
1950 J. 1. KUNTZ 2,516,999
KERCHIEF RETAINER Filed April 14, 1949 Inventor James I. Kunrz By QM Patented Aug. 1, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a clasp of the barrette type and has for its primary object to securely retain a kerchief or similar head protective or decorative scarf in the desired position and to thereby prevent the kerchief from slipping off the head.
A meritorious feature of this invention resides in the provision of a hair fastener of the barrette type having a clamping tongue and catch means for retaining the tongue in its closed position and in the provision of means carried by the hair fastener for engaging and anchoring a kerchief on the head.
These and ancillary objects and other features of merit are attained by this invention, a preferred embodiment of which is set forth in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective;
Figure 2 is a top plan view;
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view; and
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing,
this invention, generally designated by the character reference It], includes a bar or body member l2 which is longitudinally curved to conform to the contour of the head, and which is formed on its under side with a series of teeth l4. A tongue it, formed from a single piece of spring wire, includes parallel arms l8 and 20, which have inturned ends pivotally secured in a pivot lug 22 formed integrally at one end of the bar. A catch 24 is formed integrally at the opposing end of the bar and is adapted to receive the free end 26 of the tongue, the free end being constricted and extended beyond the end of the bar.
The foregoing elements constitute a conVentional type of barrette, which is used to retain the hair in place. To this conventional structure is added a kerchief anchoring device 28 so that the barrette serves in a dual capacity as a hair fastener and a scarf retainer. The device 28 includes a body member formed from a single piece of wire 39 which is preferably U-shaped and has opposing parallel legs 32 and 34. The latter are formed with upwardly curved pointed extremities 3B and 38, the legs being secured on the upper side of the bar I 2 adjacent their extremities in a conventional manner.
It can be appreciated that the ends 36 and 38 will penetrate the edge of a kerchief and retain it in place. Of course any type of hair fastener can be used and the kerchief retainer can be formed in any shape and with only one or any number of pointed ends.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a kerchief retainer, a hair engaging clasp, a U-shaped wire member having its legs superimposed transversely on said clasp and having upwardly curved end prongs on its legs, said end prongs being disposed adjacent to the clasp.
2. In a kerchief retainer, a hair engaging clasp having a back section, a U-shaped wire member disposed transversely on the back section, the web of the wire member lying in a plane below the back section and being disposed rearwardly thereof, and the legs of the member terminating in prong ends extending forwardly of the back section and lying in a plane above the back section and legs.
