Description

July 12, 1949. o, SQERGEL 2,475,998
HAIR RETAINER OR BARRETTE Filed July 25, 1947 I N VEN TOR. 0x? I? 605K661 Y V, w 14 7'70 z/vs x Patented July 12, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in hair pins, bobby pins, barrettes, clips and similar devices usually used by women for holding the hair on their head in suitable or desirable positions.
My invention relates more particularly to hair fastening device more in the nature of a clip or barrette, the same being designed so that a medial support thereon, which is pivotally mounted at one end, can be swung up or down to embrace a portion of the hair which it is desired to secure together.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a device of the type described that is capable of being clasped or unclasped over the hair and which can be closed or locked in position effectively, so that under normal or usual wear or use, it will not separate from the hair or fall from the head.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the type described provided with a pivotally mounted swingable arm which, in its open position, can be positioned over a strand of hair and then pressed down and have its end pulled under the cross-bar of its frame, thereby effectively locking the device in position and preventing its removal except by unclasping in the same manner in which it has been clasped.
Other objects and advantages will be more apparent from the following description wherein reference is had to the accompanying drawing upon which:
Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of the clasp or barrette;
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the same taken generally on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view showing the pivotally mounted arm in an open or raised position capable of receiving a strand of hair which is to be clasped and held in position; and
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view through the frame and arm taken generally on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 showing a strand of hair clasped in position.
In the embodiment of the invention which I have chosen to illustrate and describe, the clasp or barrette may comprise a U-shaped frame member In having the side portions 12 and [4 connected by an end portion I 6. At the back end of the frame I mount a pivot pin [8 in the two side portions thereof and position an arm 20 upon the pin, providing spacers 22 and 24 upon opposite sides of the arm 20 to position the arm medially between the sides of the frame.
The arm 20, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, is provided with an elongated slot 26 terminating at its end in an upwardly directed socket 28. Both of the side portions I and I2 are provided on their lower edge with a plurality of teeth 80 2 to normally prevent the slipping of the unit in the hair.
When it is desired to embrace a strand of hair with the barrette or clasp the arm 20 is slid back on the pivot I8 to the position shown in Fig. 3. It is then placed in the hair and, after a strand of hair has been gathered between the upper side of the frame in and the arm 20, the end of the arm is moved downwardly below the portion iii of the frame and then pulled forward to the position shown in Fig. 2. In this position the hair is locked as shown in Fig. 4 between the frame portions and the arm and the barrette or clasp is normally prevented from falling out or being loosened while in use. To remove the barrette or clasp from the hair the arm 20 is again slid back upon the pivot l8, so that the end of the same clears the cross frame portion IS in which position it can again be raised to the position shown in Fig. 3.
While I have illustrated and described a specific embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that changes and modifications may be made in the exact details shown and I do not wish to be limited in any particular; rather what I desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An article of the type described comprising a U-shaped frame member, a pivot pin between the extended ends of said member, an arm mounted on said pin, said arm having a bayonet slot lock through which said pinextends, whereby said arm is capable of movement to lock the end of the same under the end wall of said frame member to hold said arm in operative position.
2. An article of the type described comprising a U-shaped frame member, a pivot pin between the extended ends of said member, an arm mounted on said pin, said arm having a bayonet slot lock through which said pin extends, whereby said arm is capable of movement to lock the end of the same under the end wall of said frame member to hold said arm in operative position, and said pivot pin having spacers thereon positioned upon opposite sides of said arm.
