H. FEDER.
COMBINED HAIR BOLL AND 00MB.
APPLIUATION IILED JULY 16,
Patented Feb. 23, 1909.
:n: Novem: PETERS co, wAsmNaroN. vA c UNITED STATES HARRY FEDER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED HAIR-ROLL AND 00MB.
Specication'of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 16,
Patented Feb. 23, 1909.
1908. Serial No. 443,868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY FEDER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Combined Hair-Roll and Comb, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to im rovements in a combined hair-roll and com and has for its object to provide means for instantly attachin and detaching the comb or combs and rol, said means comprising tongues on the comb or combs arranged to be attached to and detached from the roll when the roll is` extended beyond its normal position and locked to the roll when the roll is contracted in its normal osition.
A further o ject is to provide longitudinally and transversely extended tongues on the comb or combs so that the same may be detachably secured to the hair-roll in such a manner as to prevent any rolling movement of the roll with respect to the comb or combs.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawin s, in which` igure 1 is a view of the combined hair roll and comb in perspective, Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal section through one of the combs and a portion of the rol on a larger scale, Fig. 3 is a transverse section on a larger scale taken in the plane of the line A-A of Fi 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, ig. 4 is a View in perspective of a modified form showing one comb only, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the combs.y
The hair-roll is denoted by l and is formed of Wire Woven into the desired shape and size. This hair-roll may be extended and contracted.
One or more combs may be detachably secured to the hair roll in any desired position along `the same, as follows: Each comb com rises a body portion 2 from which the usua teeth 3 depend. The body portion 2 of the comb is provided at its ends with longitudinally extended tongues 4 and 5 and intermediate its ends with a transversely extended ton ue 6. To attach the comb to the hair-roll the transversely extended tongue 6 is engaged with the roll. The roll is then extended beyond its normal position and the longitudinally extended lugs 4 and 5 are inserted through the wire meshes into the interior of the roll. As the roll contracts to its normal position, the tongues will be firmly locked within the roll.
The transversely extended tongue 6 serves to prevent any rolling of the roll with respect to the comb when in use and therefore holds the roll in its predetermined position With respect to the comb.
lt will be seen that by having the hair roll and comb or combs instantly detachable, the comb or combs may be laced in any desired osition along the hair roll according to tie desires of the erson using the combined hair roll and com For instance, if the persons hair is thicker in certain portions and thinner in other ortions, the comb or combs may be detac ably secured to the roll at the proper points thereon to engage the thicker portions of the hair. Also, by this instant adjustability of the comb or combs with respect to the hair roll, the combs may be arranged in the proper position according to the style in which the lair is to be Worn.
While Iv have shown and described the comb as being provided with longitudinally and transversely extended tongues for detachably securing it to the roll, it is to be understood that the comb could be detachably secured to the roll Without the use of the transversely extended tongue. It is also to be understood that the comb may be provided Within the scope of the appended claims with various other means than those herein shown and described for detachably securing the comb to the roll Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the form herein shown and described, but
l/Vhat I claim is l. Ahair-roll and` a comb provided with tongues arranged to engage the roll for detachably securing the comb thereto.
2. A hair-roll and a plurality of combs, each rovided with longitudinally and transverse y extended tongues arranged to engage the roll for detachably securing the comb thereto.
3. As an article of manufacture, a comb having a body, teeth, and rigid prongs extending outwardly directly from the back edges of the ends of the body, the end teeth and prongs constituting a continuous curve.
4. As an article of manufacture, a comb longitudinally and transversely extendedI having a curved body, curved teeth, and in tegral prongs onthe back of the body extending longitudinally in opposite directions and constituting substantially a continuation of the curve of the teeth.
5. As an article of manufacture, a comb having a body, teeth, and rigid means at the ends of the back edge of the body extending directly from points adjacent to the butts of the end teeth by Which it may be iirmly secured to a hair roll. p
6. As an article of manufacture, a comb having teeth and a back making a substantially continuous curve with the teeth, and provided with a pair of rigid prongs on the opposite ends thereof hy Which it may be secured to a hair roll.
7; rl`he combination with a hair roll, of a comb having teeth and a back making a substantially continuous curve with the teeth and rovided With rigid prongs thereon by Wlllllic it is removably mounted on the hair ro 8. The combination With a hair roll, of a comb having teeth and integral means for removably attaching it to the hair roll, malring a substantially continuous curve With the teeth.
9. The combination With a hair roll, of a comb having means for firmly and removably attaching it thereto and for preventing a relative rocking motion between the roll and comb.
10. The combination With a hair roll, of a comb having teeth, a body, and three prongs thereon located substantially at equal distances apart for removably, and substantially immovably holding it on the roll.
11. The combination with a hair roll, of a comb having teeth, prongs located adjacent to the end teeth by Which it is removably mounted on the hair roll, and an additional prong for preventing a rocking motion.
12. As an article of manufacture, a comb having teeth and a rigid 'Hat prong on each end making a substantially continuous curve with the end teeth.
13. As an article of manufacture, a comb having teeth, a prong on each end, and an additional prong between the end prongs.
14. As an article of manufacture, a comb having teeth, a prong cn each end, and an additional prong at an angle to the saidend prongs.
In testimony, that l claim the foregoing as my invention, l have signed my naine in presence of two Witnesses, this thirtieth day of June 1908.
HARRY FEDER.
