SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 779,413, dated January 10, 1905.

Application led September 12, 1904. Serial No. 224,093.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, RUSSELL H. DAMoN, of Leominster, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puff-Combs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

This invention relates to toilet articles, and more particularly to that class designated as "combined hair-roll and comb.

It has for its object the provision of a device of this character formed from a wire mesh that is suitably secured to a comb or a plurality of combs. It may be that a single comb is employed, together with a plurality of rolls.

The invention has also for its object the use of a mesh of soft material to cover the wire mesh in order that the hair is in no wise injured When the device .is in use.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which the connection between the roll and comb is so made that the roll is allowed a slight movement with relation to the comb in order that the disadvantage of a sti appearance may be obviated.

By the use of a device constructed according to this invention no suggestion of a hairroll is discernible.

It is also an object of the invention to produce a device of this kind in which the roll is removably secured to the comb or combs, or, in other words, to produce a hair-roll that can be employed in combination with a comb or combs of any preferred construction.

Furthermore,l the invention has for an object the provision of means whereby the soft covering for the roll may be removably secured thereto in order that covers of varying colors may be employed or in order that a cover can be removed when worn to be replaced by a new one.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of cony struction and in the arrangement and combience will be had to the accompanying drawings,forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which -Figure l is a view in elevation of a hair-roll and comb, the covering of the roll being omitted. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation similar to Fig. i, with the exception that the covering is shown applied to the roll. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation, showing a modified form of fastening the roll to the comb. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are views in elevation, showing several modified forms of the invention proper.

In the drawings, l indicates a comb of any preferred construction, having at each end and midway its upper portion the perforations 2, in which are secured the ends of the flexible connections 3 of the hair-roll 4. The roll 4 is formed of a wire mesh 5 and is preferably approximatelycircular in cross-section; but it is to be understood that it may be either elliptical' or of any other desired form, according to the requirements of practice or the determination of the user. The roll 4 is also capable of being bent longitudinally to any preferred contour. A covering-mesh 6 is applied to the support. The mesh is preferably of linen or cotton thread and is for the purpose of protecting the hair from the metallic surface of the roll. It is also colored to match the color of the hair of the user, whereby it may be made invisible to the observer. In practice it has also been found that the covering may also be made of woolen stuff.

Fitting over the end of the roll 4 are removable caps 7.. These caps may be of kid, fabric, or of metal and are employed to retain the roll in shape and also to protect the hair of the user. Ordinarily the ends of the roll would be very ragged, as the roll is made of a metallic mesh, so, therefore, can be easily seen the advantage of the removable ends. These caps also hold the removable cover or protecting-cover to the roll, as can be readily understood.

Flexible connections 3 are secured at one end to the wire mesh midway its length and to the comb at their opposite ends. By having these connections flexible a certain rocking movement is permitted the roll, which IOO permits it to give to the natural Wave of the hair, and thereby removes any doubt as to artiiice.

-It is to be understood that this combined comb and hair-roll is used as a hair-supporting means. The roll in itself has a natural resiliency, and by the use of the central connection 3 the height of the central portion of the roll with relation to the comb may be limited or adjusted. It has also been found of advantage to secure the ends of the support to the comb, as in Fig. 3. In such cases eyes 8 are formed on the removable caps 7, in which the connections between the comb and the roll at the ends are fastened. The central connection is secured to the mesh, as in the iirst form.

In Fig. 4 is shown a form of invention in which a plurality of combs are employed with the hair, as before described. Secured to both ends of the roll a is secured a small comb L.

In Fig. 5 is illustrated a form similar to Fig. 4, with the exception that the roll A is provided centrally with adepression B, whereby a waving effect may be given the device.

In Fig. 6 is shown a form wherein a plurality of rolls are employed instead of a series of combs, as in Figs. 4 and 5. Each of the rolls X is constructed similarly to that in either Figs. l or 3 and is connected to an end of the comb Y. v

The construction and operation of the invention, it is thought, Will be fully understood from the foregoing description, it being noted that all changes may be resorted to that fairly fall within the scope of the claims attached hereto without sacrificing the value thereof.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an article of the characterl described, hair-engaging means and a hair-roll arranged thereover, said roll being secured to the hairengaging means in such a manner as to permit a rocking motion thereof.

2. In a device of the character described, a comb and a roll arranged thereover, said roll being formed of a reticulated body, a protecting-cover for said roll and movable caps on the ends of the roll for securing the protecting-cover thereto.
