HAT AND BONNET FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,031, dated December 8, 1885.

Application filed March 10, 1885. Serial No. 158,377.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CLARA ABELL, of Geddes, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hat and Bonnet Fasener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device for fastening and holding a hat or bonnet on a ladys head, by means of which device the hat or bonnet can be fastened easily and rapidly.

The invention consists in the combination, with a hat or bonnet, of an elastic band having one end secured to the hat or bonnet,and having a hair-pin secured to the opposite end.

The invention also consists in parts and de tails and combinations of the same, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a face view of my improved hat and bonnet fastener, the hairpin being held up by the spring. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the hairpin being pulled down. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal View of the same.

A metal or other plate, A, is secured on the inside of the hat or bottom at the rim or sweatband, and has its top bent over to form a flange, A. On the bottom or narrower end of the plate is formed a pocket, B, open at the top, and bottom, and provided with a slot, 0, in the outer side. A hair-pin, D, is passed up through the pocket B, and to its lower closed end a wire loop, E, is fastened, which has a downwardly-projecting handle part, F. A

(ModeL) bow, G, or other ornament is fastened on the loop E, to partly conceal it. An elastic band or spring. H, is secured to the flange A, is passed through the slot O in the p0cket,and has its lower end secured on the loop E. When the hat has been placed on the head, the loop E is pulled down and pressed outward, so as to guide the points ofthc hair-pin toward the head. The loop E is then gradually released and the hair-pin is pulled upward through the hair by the elastic band, and the points of the pin are passed behind the flange A. The hat is thus held securely on the head.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with a plate having a pocket at its lower part, of a hair-pin passed through the pocket, and an elastic band or spring secured to the plate and to the hairpin, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination, with a plate having a flange at its upper end and a pocket at its l wer end, of a hair-pin passed through the pocket, and an elastic band secured to the top of the plate and to the hair-pin, substantially as herein shown and described.

3. The combinatiomwith plate A, having a pocket, B, provided with the slot 0, of the hair-pin D,and the elastic band H, secured to the top of the plate and to the hair-pin, and passed through the slot 0, substantially as herein shown and described.
