Be it known that I, MAX MAYER, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats; and I do here by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of this invention is to provide a washable light-weight summer-hat for ladies and children which will have a crown and rim covering detachablyretained in place by means which will be concealed by an ornamental portion of the hat, such covering and ornamental portion being capable of removal to permit a different covering and a difierent ornament to be used with a single frame.

The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the I claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the crown-retaining band and sash. Fig. 3 is a plan view with parts .broken away.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the skeleton frame, which consists of the crown 2 and rim 3. This may be of any ordinary form of construction; but the wire or buckram frame is preferred. The rim 3 is covered by any suitable textile material, as l, and, if desired, the facing of that portion of the material extending over the under side of the rim may be of white embroidery or colored. The crown and rim covering 5 consists of a concentric piece of embroidered material, of any suitable design, designed to extend over the crown and rest on the rim. It is held to the crown by an elastic band 6 at or near the base of the crown and having fastening means 7 at its opposite ends in the form, preferably, of interlocking hooks 0r clasps, permitting of its ready release when the covering is to be removed. This band is concealed by a ribbon sash 8, ornamentallyfinished at one end with a bow or rosette 9 to conceal the fastening means of the band. The sash, which may be of any color, is longer than the band 6, so that when the latter is stretched around the crown it will be of uniform length with the sash. The latter preferably has 00- operating fasteners 10 at its ends. The sash is shown attached to the band by stitching at or near the ends; but this is not absolutely essential.

It is manifest that several different styles of coverings may be provided for a single hat, as well as different colored sashes. The attachment and release of a covering is a matter of but a moment, and the means for fastening the same in place is entirely concealed by the sash.

I claim as my invention 1. A hat composed of a frame having a crown and rim, a covering for the crown de signed to rest on the rim, a retaining-band of elastic material having cooperating engaging means at its opposite ends, and a ribbon sash of greater length than said band, and also having cooperating engaging means at its ends.

2. A hat composed of a frame having a crown and rim, a covering for the crown designed to rest on the rim, a retaining-band of elastic material having cooperating engaging means at its opposite ends, and a ribbon sash of greater length than said band to which the latter is attached at its ends.
