UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
i SALI SIMONSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, WILLIAM FINSTER, OF BROOKLYN, AND WILLIAM B. WILLIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,333, dated Iune 27, 1882. Application filed May 27, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SALT SIMoNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reversible Hats or Caps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a reversible hat or cap composed of a covering of silk or other textile material, and a lining ot' rubber cloth' or other water-proof lnaterial, which is firmly united to the covering, the seams being so arranged that the hat or cap presents a finished appearance if it is turned inside out to bring the water-proof material on the outside as well as if it is worn with the textile material on the outside.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of a cap constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section ofthe saine on an enlarged scale;
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. t In these drawings, the letter A designates-a cap, which is constructed of a covering ofsilk or other suitable textile material and a lining ot' rubber cloth or other suitable waterproof material. The covering consists of the tip a and the side strip b, and the lining consists ofthe tip c and the side strip (l. The tips a c are placed one upon the other, and their edges a c are folded downward, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper edges, b d', of the side strips, b d, are folded inward, and the folded edge 1). is placed against the folded edge a', while the folded edge d is placed against the folded edge c', and then all these edges are united by stitches e.
The lower edges, b2 d2, of the side strips, b d, are also folded inward, placed against each other, and united by stitches f.
If the cap is to be provided with a visor, B, such visor is covered on one side with the same textile material which is used for the covering and on its other side with the same Water-proof material which is used for the lining, and the upper edge g of this visor is then bent up `and inserted between the edges b2 d2, as shown in Fig. 2, and united with the same by the stitches f. In the example shown in the drawings a binding-braid, h, is applied 5o to the edge ofthe visor, so as to impart to the same a nished appearance. By these means a cap is obtained which presents a finished appearance as well when the textile material is worn on the outside as when the cap is reversed and the Waterproof material is worn on the outside. In either case all the raw edges are concealed.
It is obvious that the shape of the crown ot' my cap may be changed without departing 6o from my invention, and also in place of the visor B a brim may be united with the crown, so as to transform the article into a hat.
If the cap is provided with a band, one side ofthe band is covered with the textile fabric and the other with the water-proof material.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, the hat or cap herein described, composed of a covering 7o of textile fabric and a lining of water-proof materia-1 connected together with the raw edges of the united parts concealed between the textile fabric and water-proof lining, whereby the hat or cap can be turned inside out to eX- pose the water-proof lining and present a finished appearance without the necessity ot' unfolding parts of the hat or cap, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my So hand and sealin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
