Be it known that I, FLORENCE E. HERN- DON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bathing-Hats; and I do.

hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to hats, and more particularly to bathing-hats, and has for its object to provide a hat which will keep the hair dry and shall also protect the face from the sun.

A further object is to provide a construction to render the hat more nearly water proof and which will produce an article both strong and durable.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specific construction shown and described may be made and that any suitable material can be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming portion of the specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hat. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the hat arranged for use when diving and Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the position which the brim of the hat assumes when it strikes the water.

Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a brim 5, formed of suitable waterproof material, preferably rubber cloth, and is provided at its outer edge with a flexible stiffening-strip 6. The brim is provided with a central circular opening 7, to the edge of which there is gathered the edge of a full crown 8 of a size to receive the hair therewithin.

Secured to the brim 5 at the edge of the opening 7 there is band 9, this band being formed of a strip of fabric doubled longitudinally and sewed together at its ends, one edge of the fabric being sewed to the under face of the brim, while the remaining edge is sewed to the inner face of the crown, and the edges of the brim and the crown thus lying between the two portions of the band 9, this arrangement preventing leaking of water between the crown and the brim, as will be readilyunderstood. Within the band 9, at the inner edge thereof, there is secured an elastic ring 10, and secured at their ends to the band are cords 11, which may be tied beneath the chin to hold the hat upon the head.

In use the hat is placed upon the head in the usual manner, the hair being disposed within the crown and the band 9 fitting the head tightly, preventing access of water to the hair.

A pair of hooks 12 are secured to the exterior of the crown at opposite points thereof, and these hooks maybe engaged with eyes 13, carried by the brim at its outer edge to hold opposite points of the brim slightly raised, and the hooks are thus engaged when diving is to be indulged in. It will thus be seen that when the brim strikes the water the front and rear portions thereof, which lie between the eyes 13, will move into the position shown in 4, thus presenting no resistance to the water. It will be obvious that if the hooks and eyes were not provided the brim would remain practically straight at several points.

What is claimed is- 1. A bathing-hat comprising a brim having a central opening, crown secured at its edge to the brim and the edge of the central opening, and a band comprising two thicknesses of material connected at their inner edges, the outer edges thereof being secured one to the inner face of the crown and the other to the under face of the brim.

2. A bathing-h at comprising a brim having a central opening and having a flexible stiffeningstrip at its periphery, a crown secured at its edge to the brim at the edge of the central opening, a band comprising two thicknesses of materialconn ected at their inner edges, the outer edges thereof being secured one to the inner face of the crown and the other to the under face of the brim to prevent leakage of water between the brim and the crown, devices carried by the crown at opposite points thereof and devices carried by the brim at opposite points of its periphery and adapted for engagement with the first-mentioned devices to hold the opposite points of the brim raised.
