UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAX COHEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HEAD FOR FUR SCARFS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,928, dated June 6, 1893.
Application filed March 14, 1893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX COHEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heads for Fur Scarfs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to animproved head for scarfs worn by ladies around the neck, said head being arranged in such a manner that the jaws can be opened and directly applied to the tail end of the scarf in place of attaching the head to the tail end by means of elastic cords and buttons, or other fastening devices.
The invention consists of a head for for articles, said head being composed of an upper and lower section, which are pivoted to each other and pressed toward each other by means of springs, both sections being provided at the front end with small tapering portions or jaws, provided with teeth, the upper jaw being also further provided with openings back of the jaw for inserting the eyes.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved head for scarfs, showing the same applied so as to hold the tail end of the same. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the head, the fur covering being removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the head, shown in open position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a neck scarf made of suitable fur, of the well known construction used for ladies.
The head B of the scarf is constructed of two sheet metal sections, the upper section I) being rounded while the lower section b is made fiat, both sections being provided with overlapping ears cl connected by pivots e, to which a helical spring f is applied, the ends of which are placed in contact with the rear end of the head sections, so as to exert pressure thereon and hold the front ends or jaws of the same in closed position. Jaws 0 made of tapering shape are riveted, soldered or Serial No. 465,955. (No-model.)
- otherwise attached to the front ends of the head sections, said jaws being provided with teeth in imitation of the teeth of a mink or other animal. The lower section Z) is provided with a tongue 9 that is soldered or otherwise attached to the same, while the upper section is provided back of the jaw with openings Z in the end portion of said section, which openings receive the eyes after the head is covered with fur. The tongue 9 is extended to the rear to form an extension 9" for covering the spring so that the same is not visible when the jaws are opened.
The advantages of my improved head for fur scarfs are that it can be opened, as shown in Fig. 4, by applying pressure to the rear ends of the head sections, so that the tail end of the scarf can be placed in position. between the two jaws and held rigidly in position thereby, without requiring buttons and elastic cords and similar devices for fastening the head to the tail end. The holding of the tail end of the scarf by the jaws of the head imparts a more natural appearance to the head, and permits alsothe quicker opening and closing of the head and the easier fastening or removing of the tail end from the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An animal head for fur scarfs, composed of two pivoted spring actuated head sections, provided with tapering and toothed jaws at the front end, the upper head section being provided with openings, one on each side of the jaw for the eyes, substantially as set forth.
2. A head for fur scarfs, composed of head sections, connected by a pivot at the rear parts, a spring applied to the pivot and acting on both rear ends of the head sections, tapering jaws having teeth attached to the front ends of the head sections, the upper head section being provided with openings for the eyes, back of the point of connection of the upper jaw with the upper head-section, substantially as set forth.
3. A head for fur-scarfs, composed of two pivoted and spring-actuated head-sections,
each provided with a tapering and toothed In testimony that I claim the foregoing as jaw at the front-end, a spring arranged on the my invention I have signed my name in prespivot of the head-sections and acting on the ence of two subscribing witnesses.
same, and a tongue in the lower section, said MAX COHEN. 5 tongue being inclosed by the lowersection Witnesses:
and bent up at the rear-end so as to extend PAUL GOEPEL,
over the spring, substantially as set forth. CHARLES SGHROEDER.
