Be it know n that I, LIZZIE A. HANSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of,

The invention has for its object to provide a hat-fastener which can be secured permanently (but removahly) to the hat in such a position that when the hat is applied to the read the fastener can be guided into engage- .ment with the hair of the wearer at the back of the head. Thus there is no necessity for frequently puncturing the hat and trimming, or ever puncturing them after the first application of the fastener to the hat, as it never need be removed or have its position changed unless desired. Moreover as it is always in place connected with the hat, it cannot become accidentally detached therefrom and lost.

The nature of the invention is fully described below, and illustrated in the accom-v panying drawings, in whichzf- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the improved hat-fastener. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same in position on the hat a portion of which is illustrated in vertical section look ing toward the rear. The three elements or members of the combination u hich constitutes my invention are, first, an integral member consisting of "-WO substantially parallel and preferably curved prongsd and .a connecti'one attheir upper ends; second, a hinge consisting of a single leaf made in two parallel folds f, g joined at one edge by the knuckle h through which the part c extends and operates like the pintle of a hinge and third an attaching member consisting of a wire v. hose central portion lc lies between the two folds f, g and thence extends through holes Z in the rear fold g, and the pointed legs 11. adapted to be forced through the body of the hat from the inside and spread against its outer surface in the manner of wire fasteners of this general description.

In 0 eration, after the wire ends a have been tirust through the crown, preferably near its lower edge, as illustrated, and bent outward flat against the outer surface thereof, the hinge lies flat against the inner surface of the hat, and the pronged member swings freely from it, and'the fastening device IS in its permanent position, whether it has been placed there by the milliner or the customer. The curvature is outward, as shown in Fig. 3, and as the fastener is se: cured to the rear portion of the hat it hangs freely by gravity in a substantially vertical line and swings naturally over the hair at the back of the head as the hat is applied, and as the rear ortion of the hat is lowered toward the head the prongs come in contact with and enter the upper portion of the mass of hair at the back of the head iided by the hand if preferred) and moves t lbwn into the hair vertically as the hat is lowered into position on the head. v

It is apparent that the fastener cannot become lost, and that the-disfigurement of and injury to the hat and trimming due to repeated thrusts through them of hat-pins is avoided.

The dotted lines shown in Fig. 3 illustrate the position of the fastener swung up into the crown of the hat when not in use.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim, and cesire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
