Be it known that L-EDWIARD H, Fathom, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Hat- V I hat pin con tructed ih a'ocordahc with m Pins, of which the following is a specifica= tion.

This invention relates to improved safety hat pin which is composed of; a wire strand adapted to be bent to form the body portion, the spring portion, and the inserting point orportion of the pin; the latter beingc'urved centrally to insure a secure fastening of thehair between the body portion and theinserting portion when the pin is used to fasten the hat" upon the head in 1 H 1 is illustrated the preferred form of my inthe ordinary manner, I

A further object of the invention contemplates the provision of ahat pin wherein the head portion not only adds materially to the ornamentality thereof, but also effects a-guard for the inserting point, the fatter being hooked or fastened beneath the said head where it is entirely concealed or hidden from view, this arrangement of the in sorting point eliminating the protruding portion of the pin and to a great extent avoiding accidents now commonly occurring where the point of the pin projects beyond the crown of the hat.

A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of asupplemental hook or spur member adapted to be secured to the body portion of the pin near thesp-ring end thereof to additionally fasten the pin to the hat and support the same against lateral movement independent of the hat when inserted within the latter in a manner to be hereinafter fully described.

The invention still further resides in the provision of an ornamental bar carried by the body portion of the pin and extending transversely thereof, the said bar engaging the crown of the hat to materially assist in retaining the entire pin in proper place thereupon. p V

The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the 'acconr panying drawings, described in the follow= ing specification and then more particularly pointed outin the claims Which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.

A hook or sp'ur member "10 is secured to the connecting portion 2 ofthe pin through the medium of a sleeve @11, the latter being arranged over the said portion 2 and a portion of th'e hook or ispur member 10 asis clearly shown in Figs.

1 and 2 of the drawings, the said sleeve being disposed near the spring end 3 of the pin. After "fastening" the inserting portion 4 of the pin through the hat in the usual mannenthe spur 10 is adapted to pierce the hat material to prevent lateral movement of the entire pin and to position the head 8 thereof in to the hat. I A bar 12 is soldered or otherwise secured in any suitable manner to the connecting portion 2 of the pin about midway the length thereof, the said bar extending transversely of the connecting portion and at an angle thereto, the bar not only adding materially to the ornamentality of the pin but also engaging thehat and with the spur or hook l0 preventing lateral movement of the pin.

Having described in detail the construction or formation of the safety hat pin it now remains to describe the application thereof. The inserting portion 4 is first passed'through the crown of the hat, the said portion catching or fastening the hair between the inner face of the hat crown and the inserting portion 4 whereupon the ex tremity of the said portion is fastened beneath the hook bar 9 provided therefor upon the under face of the head 8. The provision of the curved portion 5 will cause the hair to be firmly held against the inner face of the hat crown and in this manner securely fasten the hat upon the head. When the pointed extremity of the inserting portion at is arranged over the hook member 9 it will be seen that a guard is provided therefor and that the said pin is entirely concealed or hid den from View where it cannot injure or in any way annoy a person other than the one wearing the pin.

After fastening the inserting portion 4 to the hat inthe manner above set forth the hook or spur member 10 is adapted to pierce proper place with respect the hat material and in this manner prevent lateral movement of the pin independent of the hat, the bar 12 engaging the hat crown thus adding materiallyto the rigid support of the hat pin upon the hat.

While I have illustrated the head and the transversely extending bar as being plain, either or both may be highly ornamented or jeweled to materially add to the appearance of the pin.

- It will be seen from the above, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing 'that the curved extension 5 of the inserting portion of the pin firmly fastens the latter upon'the head of the wearer by reason of its engagement with the hair; that the hook or spur l0 prevents lateral movement of the entire pin and that the spring action necessary to the operation of the pin is generated in the portion 3 thereof as the strand of wire upon which the main portion of the pin is formed is of a highly resilient or springy composition.

It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that Various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the class described, a pin body portion, a pin secured thereto at one end, means for releasably holding said pin at the opposite end of said body portion, a short spur disposed at the first named end, and a member secured to said body portion and extending transversely thereof, substantially as set forth.

2. A safety pin including a body portion and an inserting portion, an OffSGt formed intermediate the ends of the said inserting portion, said ofiset adapted to extend in close proximity with the said body portion when fastened, a head, a hook member arranged beneath the said head adapted to retain the point of the inserting portion therebeneath, a supplemental spur carried by the said body portion, and a cross bar extending transversely of the said connecting :bar adapted to lock the pin against lateral movement, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a safety hat pin, the combination of a body portion and an inserting portion formed from a single strand of resilient wire, the said inserting portion having an "inwardly curved portion formed about midway the length thereof, a head carried by the said body portion, a hook secured to the under face of the said head over which the said inserting portion is fitted, a supplemental spur member carried by the said wire strand adapted to engage the hat to which the safety pin is secured for preventing lateral movement of the said pin, and a bar carried by the said body portion and disposed transversely thereof adapted to engage the hat to prevent movement of the said pin, as and for the purpose set forth.
