UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUISE B. LARIDON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COLLAR-SUPPORTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUISE B. LARIDON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar- Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to collar supporters of the detachable type purposed as the name implies primarily for the support of collars and similar portions of dress, and particularly for such collars as are composed of delicate fabric, such as lace and net.
The essential objects of my invention are to provide a stiffening means adapted to facile application to the collar, simplicity of construction, adaptability to firm adjustment without injury to the fabric, inexpensiveness of construction, and non-rotatability of the engaging members.
To the above ends and to others which will be referred to in the specification herewith, my invention consists in such parts and combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views,Figures 1 and 2 are front and side elevations, respectively, of my novel supporter, Fig. 3, a section of the same on line wa: of Fig. 1, Fig. 4, a front elevation enlarged of one end of the supporter in engaged position, Fig. 5, a detailed view of one of the engaging members, and Fig. 6, a front of a modified form of my device.
My supporter comprises a body 1 of flexible resilient material such as celluloid, and is of oblong shape. Near each end of the body 1 is a centrally located perforation 2, adapted to receive the body 3 of an eyelet, one of whose ends is flanged over as at 4 upon the rear face of the body, and whose opposite end 5 is likewise flanged or overlapped. Intermediate the head or flange 5 and the face of the body 1 is located an engaging member 6 consisting in detail of a circular closed loop 7 formed by bending up a wire blank of preferably cylindrical, pliable, and resilient material, and forming Specification of Letters Patent.

upwardly directed and preferably outwardly inclined arms 8, extending from the loop and terminating in the ends 9, which may be blunt or pointed. The coil 7 tightly grips the outer surface of the body of the eyelet 3 and is heldvrigidly against the face of the body 1 by clamping or clenching ends 5, which press against the exterior of the member. member may extend vertically as shown in Fig. 1, or they may be inclined outwardly as shown in Fig. 5, but the latter form is preferred.
In engaging my supporter the operations are as follows :The arms or prongs 8 at one end of the body are inserted into the fabric, then the body is transversely bent to lessen the distance between its ends, and finally the The arms 8 of the last mentioned prongs upon the opposite ends of the body .and the operation of engagement is completed after the steps described by inwardly bending the arms or prongs 8 across one another and bringing them downwardly into an inclined crossed relation, or in horizontal alinement with each other, thereby forcing the fabric downwardly along the arms 8 and binding or clamping the parts of the fabric engaged at the point of intersection of the arms. The crossed position of the arms is best shown in Fig. 4.
In Fig. 6 is shown a modified form of my invention wherein the engaging member consists of an open loop 11 rather than a closed loop as 9. The arms 12 which are continuous with this loop are also preferably separated and inclined as they leave the loop, and are also of pliable material to facilitate their being bent inwardly toward and past each other into a clamping position such as that hereinabove described with regard to the preferred form.
It will be observed that my supporter after the clenching or crossing of the ends is securely fastened to the fabric as if sewn therewith. The flanges of the eyelet member are capable of such tight clamping to the body as to insure against any rotation of the loop during the bending of the pliable engaging arms.
hat I claim is,
A supporter comprising a flexible body and a fastening member rigidly connected with the body and comprising a coil rigidly aflixed to the body portion, and pliable arms extending from said coil for engagement with the fabric and adapted to be bent in 10 the plane of said body and then crossed and depressed into alinement With each other.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
