Description

G. H. LUNEBURG.
GARTER.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 30, 1920.
1,387,058. Patented Aug. 9, 1921.
srarssrT-ENT F E-r Gus'rAv H; LUNEBURG, or orrroaeo, rumors.
T all w Zwm it may concern j Be it known that I, GUs'rAv H..L -NE- arms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, haveinvented certainnew and useful Improvements in Garters, ofwhich the following is a specification.
The present invention has to do with improvements in garters of the general type in which there is provided a leg band which encircles the leg of the wearer, in conjunction with a pendent catch. One of the objects of the invention is to'provide greater flexibility and resiliency in this type of garter, and particularly in the pendent portion thereof. In this connection an object is to provide an elastic attachment of the catchto the leg band.
Another object of the invention is to provide a garter which shall be provided with a pendent pad of elastic material to which the catch is fastened; and more particularly to provide a pad of elastic material so that the catch will be supported in an elastic manner from both sides.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a garter having a leg band and an elastic pad formed from a single piece of material so as to facilitate manufacture and reduce the cost thereof. In this connection, a further object is to provide an arrangement such that the elastic pad shall be of triangular form.
Other objects and uses of the invention will appear from a detailed description of the same which consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing: I
Figure 1 shows a front elevation of a garter embodying the features of the present invention; and
Fig. 2 shows a back fragmentary view of the pad portion and the catch. 7
The garter illustrated comprises a single continuous strip of elastic material 3,, a suitable clip 4, by the use of which it may be applied to or removed from the wearers leg, and the catch 5 by means of which the stocking or sock is attached to the garter.
The body portion of the garter comprises a single continuous strip 3 of elastic material. One end of this strip 3 is fastened to the adjustable catch 4: by means of a buckle 6 inthe usual manner, and the other end portion of the strip 3 is so treated as to pro- GARTER."
videthe triangular. elastic pad 7. This is to provide an incision at thepoint 8 so that the end portlon can be folded back as shown Specification of Letters Patent. Patentgd Aug. 9 Application filed October. so, 1920'. Serial No. 420,631: v I
' done by slitting or cutting-the elastic-.strip at 9'to provide the otherisideofa V-shaped;
elastic pad, the extreme end 10 b eing thensewed or otherw'ise'securedto the strip at the upper end of the other side of the V- I shaped pad, In this way a triangular shaped pad of elastic material is formed in the free end of the continuous elastic strip .and at the same time the'materialof said'pad will lie smooth and without buckling at the lower'portion of the V.
The catch 5 is attached to the centralpor- 151011 of the V of the pad by means of a strip of tape 10 sewed over the incision 8, or in any other suitable manner, said tape 10, and if desired other stitching, serving to hold the sides of the incision together. I
It will be observed that a straight ClOWVIl",
ward pull on the catch 5 serves to strain both sides of the V equally, so that the pad is com-- pelled to yield on both sides. On the other hand, a downward and 'sidewise pull on the catch 5 will strain one side or the other of the V to a greater or less extent, but the elastic pad is able to yield in such a manneras to take up the strain in the most natural and direct way. I
The horizontal or cross bar of the V- shaped pad serves to complete a more or less direct circle around the leg of the wearer and takes the ordinary strain when the garter is first buckled around the leg. After the strain is thrown on the catch 5, the horizontal cross bar may or may not be'relieved of strain depending upon the amount of pull on the catch 5 as compared to the original tightness of the garter on the leg. In
some cases the horizontal cross bar may bedispensed with but ordinarily will be made use of.
While I have herein shown and described only a singleembodiment of'my invention,
of the incision together and thereby form a V- shaped elastic pad, means for securing the strip of elastic material in such position, a catch adjacent to the lower point of the elastic pad, the free end of the strip of elastic material being folded back and across the garter at a point above the elastic pad, means for securing the extreme end of said folded portion in position, and means for detachably securing the other end of the elastic strip to the elastic pad so formed, substan tially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture a garter comprising a continuous strip of elastic material adapted to surround the leg of the wearer, there being an incision extending downwardly through said strip of elastic material from its upper edge to a point adjacent to its lower edge, the elastic strip be.- ing folded at the said incision to bring the edges of the incision together and thereby forming a ti-shaped elastic pad, means for securing the strip of elastic material in such position, a catch adjacent to the lower point of the elastic pad, and means for detachably securing the other end of the elastic strip to the elastic pad so formed, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture a garter comprising a strip of material adapted to pass around the leg of the wearer, in conjunction with a triangular shaped pad of elastic material, a catch fixedly secured to the lower corner of said pad, means for de tachably securing the other end of the strip to a fixed point at the upper corner of the pad, the pad comprising a continuous strip of elastic material folded to provide three sides of a triangle and yieldable in the directions of the lengths of said sides, substantially as described.
