To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, LILLIAN B. PETERS, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented anew and useful Hat-Pin, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a hat pin formed in two parts permanently connected together and constituting the respective end portions of the pin, each of said end portions being provided with a head so that when the hat pin is in use the exposed portion thereof will be headed or guarded and no projecting point will be exposed.
Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.
The accompanying drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention, and referring thereto:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hat pin in position for use, a position of the hat being shown in dotted lines, and a portion of the hat in full lines. Fig."2 is a side elevation of the hat pin in closed position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the hat pin in open position. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of one end portion of the hat pin. Fig. 5 is a section on line xii-m5, Fig. 2, with the spring omitted.
The hat pin comprises a. pin member 1 having a. head 2 and a sleeve or tubular pin member 3 having a head 4, the pin member 1 being pointed at one end as at 1, and adapted to slide or telescope within the tubular member 3. A helical spring 6 is connected at its ends to the respective heads 2 and 4 and in normal position of the device extends around the two members 1 and 3 as shown in Fig. 2. Each of the heads 2 and 4 is preferably provided with a plurality of holes 7 on the side facing the pin member or the other head to receive said pin member as hereinafter set forth.
The device is used as follows: The normal position of the pin is shown in Fig. 2 with the pin member 1 sheathed in the tubular member 3v and held in position therein by the tension of the spring 6. Vhen it is desired to use the device, the members 1 and 3 are drawn apart so as to withdraw the pin member 1 from the tubular member 3 and said members are then spread apart as shown in Fig. 3, so as to provide a considerable portion of the spring as shown at 6 which is not in engagement with either of the members 1 or 3, such portion of the spring being sufhcient to reach, say, half way around the hat to be attached. This portion of the spring is then placed against the front or side of the hat and the members 1 and 3 inserted through the side of the hat, the spring portion 6 bending around the hat so as to be in resilient contact with the hat, and to tend to draw the members 1 and 3 inwardly into the hat. Each of the members 1 and 3 passes through the hat of the wearer and into one of the holes in the head 4 or 2 of the other member so as to securely fasten the hat in place.
What I claim is:
1. A hat pin comprising two pin members, a head on each of said pin members, a spring connecting the heads of said pin members adapted to extend around the crown of the hat and draw the pin members inwardly, and said pin members being adapted to be inserted completely through the coils of the spring when the pin is not in use.
2. A hat pin comprising two pin members, a head on each of said pin members, a spring connecting the heads of said pin members adapted to extend around the crown of the hat and draw the pin members inwardly, each of said pin members adapted to be projected through a predetermined number of coils at one end of the spring to adjust the tension of the spring around the crown of the hat.
