JOZSELE KUBINYI, OF CANONSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAT-PIN-POINT PROTECTOR AND FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 14, 1912.
Patented Aug. 27, 1912; Serial No. 683,830.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Jozsnr KUBTNYI, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at (Janonsburg, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin-Point Protectors and Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to hatpin point protectors and fasteners, and the objects of my invention are to provide a novel device that can be easily and quickly attached to the point of a pin to retain the pin in a hat, whereby it cannot become accidentally displaced or lost, and to provide a device that will protect and shield the pointed end of the pin whereby pedestrians or persons in the vicinity of the pin cannot be injured.
Further objects "of my invention are to provide a device of the above type for frictionally holding the end of a pin and to provide a pin pointprotector and fastener that can be easily and quickly manipulated, manufactured at a comparatively small cost and suitably ornamented.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pin provided with the protector and fastener, Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the protector and fastener partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 3 is a plan of the same.
A protector in accordance with this invention comprises two pivoted members furnished with means for frictionally engaging the pointed end of a pin. Each member comprises an oblong plate 1 having the longitudinal edges thereof provided with side walls 2 and these side walls at a point adjacent to the outer ends thereof have ears Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. G.
3 pivotally connected together by rivets or pins 4. One of the members is of a less width than the other member, whereby the ears of the narrow member can be fitted between the ears of the wide member and both of said members are preferably semi-cylindrical, as best shown in Fig. 3 whereby a cylindrical device is provided that has a shape tending to ornament the same.
The outer ends of the members serve func tionally as handles and the inner ends of the members are connected by two coiled retractile springs 5 and 6. The intern'iediate or central-most convolutions of these springs are adapted to engage and frictionally hold the pointed end of a pin 7, the point 8 of the pin being shielded and protected by the two members of the fastener. The end convolution of the springs can be soldered or otherwise connected to the members and the tension of these springs is adapted to maintain the inner ends of the members in a closed position whereby it will be necessary to press the outer ends of the members together when it is desired to open the inner ends and expand the springs to receive the pointed end of the pin.
What I claim is A hatpin point protector and fastener comprising semi-cylindrical members having ears pivotally connected together with the outer ends of said members serving functionally as handles, and coiled retractile springs arranged between the inner ends of said members and attached thereto and adapted to be expanded whereby the intermediate or central-most convolutions of the springs can receive the pointed end of a pin.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
