S. STRANSKY.
HAT PIN.
APPLIOATION FILED 001.2, 1911.
Patented Feb. 6, 1912 V INVENTOR 5 f/"a/15%y. BY
ATTORNES WITNESSES STEPHEN STRANSKY, OF WEST PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAT-PIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1912.
Application filed October 2, 1911. Serial No. 652,309.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN STRANSKY, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at West Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to hatpins, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a double hatpin with a detachable head or guard for protecting the pointed ends of the pin, whereby pedestrians or objects will not be injured by contacting with the pin.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel guard for looking a pin in a hat, whereby the pin cannot become accidentally displaced relatively to the hat.
A further object of this invention is to provide hatpin point protectors that are simple in construction, durable, and highly eflicient for the purposes for which they are intended.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a pin in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the detachable head or guard thereof, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the same,
showing the end of a pin in the head or guard, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a detached casing forming part of the head or guard, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a detached closure for the casing, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a detached corrugated gripping member adapted to form part of the casing.
A pin in accordance with this invention comprises an ornamental head 1 having two pins 2 arranged in parallelism, said pins having pointed ends 3. The pins correspond in length and are adapted to extend through a hat for retaining the hat upon the head.
To guard and protect the pointed ends of the pins 2, a detachable ornamental head is employed, this head comprisng a shell 1 corresponding in exterior finish to the head 1, and arranged within the shell 4 there is a rectangular casing, comprising a rear plate 5, side walls 6 and a top wall 7. The rear plate 5 has the lower edge thereof bent inwardly and curved, as at 8 and the side walls 6 are apertured, as at 9 whereby the apertured lugs 10 of a closure 11 can be pivotally connected to the walls 6 by rivets 12 or other fastening means. The closure 11 corresponds in size to the rear plate 5 and said closure has one end thereof bent, as at 13 to cooperate with the bent end of the rear plate 5 in providing an entrance opening for the pointed ends 3 of the pins 2. The pointed ends 3 of the pins 2 have annular grooves 14. and the bent ends of the rear plate 5 and the closure 11 are adapted to engage in said grooves to assist in retaining the pointed ends of the pins in engagement wlth the detachable head or guard. The bent end 13 of the closure 11 is held in engagement with the pins 2 by the ends of a flat spring 15 engaging the inner side of the closure 11, said spring being secured to the rear plate 5 by a rivet 6 that passes through an opening 17 provided therefor in the rear plate 5.
Soldered or otherwise connected to the rear plate 5 is a corrugated gripping member 18 and the corrugations of this member are adapted to receive the pointed ends 3 of the pins 2. The gripping member is made of resilient metal and said member coiiperates with the bent ends of the rear plate 5 and the closure 11 in holding the pointed ends of the pins 2.
The detachable head or guard 5 in its entirety can be made of light and durable metal and said head, as well as the head 1, is susceptible to any desired ornamentation as the use of stones 19. In making the detachable head or guard of a width corresponding to the fixed head 1, the pointed ends of the pins can be held-within the detachable head or guard, even though the pins 2 are moved out of parallelism.
What I claim is i ate with said closure in retaining said de- 10 In a hatpin, a head, pins carried thereby tachable head upon said pins. and arranged in parallelism, a head detach- In testimony whereof I aflix my signaahly mounted upon the pointed ends of said ture in the presence of two witnesses. pins, a casing arranged Within said head, a
