HAT PIN.

JAMES THOMAS, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAT-PIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907.
Application filed March 5,1907- Serial No- 360,638.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES THOMAS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HatPins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 1
This invention relates to hat pins, and the invention has for its object to provide a hat pin with a novel fastener for retaining a pin in a hat.
Another object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive fastener that can be readily applied to an ordinary hat pin, the fastener being constructed to frictionally engage the pin and firmly lock the same within a hat.
WVith the above and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a pin equipped with my improved fastener, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the fastener, Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same showing the hat pin in section, Fig. 4 is an underneath plan view of the head of the fastener, hat pin being shown in section, and Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the body of the fastener.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates an ordinary pointed hat pin having an ornamental head Upon the pin 1 is slidably mounted the body 3 of my improved fas tener, the body being in the form of a disk provided with an annular flange to form a compartment 4 to receive the head 5, said head being provided with a tubular extension or sleeve 6 having a tapering end 7.
The inner face of the head 5 is provided with a radially disposed handle 8 adapted to project through a slot 9 formed in the flange of the body 3 of the fastener. The head is also provided with a lever 10 said lever being pivoted, as at 11. The lever 10 protrudes through a slot 12 formed in the flange of the body 3, and is normally held in engagement with the pin 1 by a spring 14 secured to said head. The head 5 is received within the flange of the disk 3 and suitably secured in the compartment 4 of the fastener, whereby the body and the head of said fastener will be practically one piece.
The pivoted spring-held lever 10 frictionally engaging the pin 1 is adapted to prevent the pin from becoming disengaged from a hat, when the fastener is moved to engage the crown or that portion of a hat through which the pin passes. By using the handle 8 and pressing the lever 10 toward said handle, a person can easily and quickly adjust the fastener upon the pin 1 or entirely remove the same from said pin, this being essential when the pin is to be inserted in the hat.
It is obvious that the fastener can be suitably ornamented to present a neat and attractive appearance,'and can be used in connection with various kinds of large hair pins.
I desire it to be understood that such alterations in the size, proportion and minor details of my invention as are permissible by the appended claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a hat pin, of a fastener slidably mounted upon said pin, said fastener consisting of a recessed body, a head fitting in said body and having a tubular tapering extension, a spring pressed lever pivotally connected to said head and adapted to frictionally engage said pin, and a protruding handle carried by said head.
2. The combination with a hat pin, of a fastener slidably mounted upon said pin, and consisting of a slotted body, a head carried by said body and having a tubular extension, a spring pressed lever carried by said head and frictionally engaging said pin, and protruding through said slotted body, and a handle carried by said head and protruding through said slotted body.
3. The combination with a hat pin, of a fastener slidably mounted thereon, said fastener consisting of a recessed body, a head fitting in said body, a spring-pressed lever pivotally connected to said head and frictionally engaging said pin, and a handle fixedly secured to saidhead and protruding outside of said body.
. 4. The combination with a pin, of a fastener slidably mounted thereon, and cornprising a recessed body, a head fitted thereon and secured thereto, a lever pivotally se cured at one end to the inner face of said head and frictionally engaging said pin With its free end projecting beyond the periphery of the body, means carried by said head to facilitate the movement of said lever, and
means to normally hold said lever in engagement With said pin.
In testimony whereof I a'HiX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
