MARTIN H. SCHMIDT, IBERTEL H. SCHMIDT, AND ANGELO B. SEBERG, OF OAKLAND,

ATTACHMENT FOR HAT-PINS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Man'rm H. SCHMIDT, Bearer. H. SCHMIDT, and AN- GELO R. SEBERG, citizens of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
The hereinafter described invention is designed for use in connection with hat pins used by women for the securing of hats, and is designed not only to protect the point of the hat pin. but to provide for interchangeability of the ornamental head relative to the pin, so that the pin heads may be varied in accordance with the pleasure of the owner thereof; the objects of the invention being to provide an attachment which will allow for the head being positively locked to the point end of the pin and when in locked position held against accidental displacement or disengagement; to provide for the inter-changeability of the head of the hat pin, so that heads of differ ent shape, ornamentation and value may be utilized in connection with the hat pins, and, in general, to provide an attachmentfor uniting the heads of the pin thereto which shall be simple of construction, durable, effective and inexpensive as to manufacture, and one whereby the loss of the pin and head .by accidental displacement or release from locked engagement with each other is provided against.
To comprehend the invention reference should be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of a hat in showing our improved attachment applied to the ends thereof, one of said attachments being in longitudinal section for disclosing the lock connection and the construction of the connected parts. Fig. 2 is a part broken detail view of the spring held lock thimble 0r sleeve. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the head retaining member with the or namental head of the pin removed therefrom. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of one of the attachments with its parts positioned for locked engagement with the point of the hat pin.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 is used to indicate an ordinary hat pin pointed at its end, and provided adjacent its pointed Specification of Letters Patent.

end with an annular groove 2 for engagement by the locking means when the head attachment is applied thereto,
The ornamental heads 3 in the present case are detachably united in any suitable manner to a base plate 4, )referably by spring clips 5 which fit within an annular groove 6 in the base plate 4. However, the ornamental head may be formed integral with the base plate 4 or in certain cases the plate 4 may comprise the head of the pin.
Since each of the head attachments which likewise serve as point protectors for the ends of the pin are alike in construction, it will be suflicient to describe the construction and operation of one of the same.
The attachment comprises a plate 4, i
which, as above stated, may constitute the ornamental head of the pin or the means for sustaining an ornamental head applied thereto, and the said plate, 4, which is preferably circular in'cross-section, is provided with a conical shaped depending stem 7 having therein a tapering bore 8 which gradually reduces in diameter toward the plate 4.
On the conical stem 7 is slidably mounted a thimble or sleeve 9, normally held in place by the tension of a coiled ex ansion spring 10 fitted onto the stem T'an which bears against an inturned flange 11 at the upper end of the sleeve 9 and an outwardly projected annular flange 12 at the lower end of the stem 7, the said flanges 11 and 12 serving .as abut-merits for the upper and lower ends of the spring 10.
. The sleeve 9 terminates in an inturned extension which fits within the bore 8 of the stem 7 and the said extension 13 is slotted, as at 13', to form spring arms 14 which give or are compressed together as forced within the tapering bore 8 of the stem 7 during the upward movement of the sleeve 9 relative to the said stem. The arms 14 of the sleeve 9 are provided adjacent their lower end portions with an inwardly projecting shoulder or head 15, which, when the point of the pin 1 is fitted within the bore 8 of the stem 7 and the sleeve 9 forced upwardly onto the said stem by the action of the spring 10, engage with the annular groove 2 of the pin 1 and hold the said in firmly. locked to the head securing attac ment, the pin 1 being so held in locked engagement until the sleeve 9 is forced downwardly to release the fingers or arms let from engagement with the annular groove 2. Until the sleeve 9 is actuated manually to release the pin 1, the same cannot be separated or withdrawn from within the head securing attachment. It will be noted that the pin is not united to the head by frictional engaging means, which at best is but an insecure fastening, but is positively locked to the head securing means, consequently It is impossible to separate the pin from its locked engagement unless the sleeve 9 1s deliberately manipulated to release the same. Accidental loss of the ornamental heads and the pin is thus provided against, which is an important consideration where the ornamental heads are of value.
By making provisions for the detachability of the heads from the securing means,
heads of varying value and ornamentation may be maintained on hand for use in connection with the securing means, thus permitting inter-changeability of heads and allowing one pin to be varied as to its head ornamentation in accordance with the wish of the user thereof, and in conformity to the hat worn. However, as stated, the plate 4: and the head 3 may be formed integral.v
While the described construction of the various working parts is preferred, still we do not wish to be understood as confining ourselves to such detailedconstruction; inasmuch as modifications thereof within the spirit and scope of our invention as defined by the appended claims, may be made without creating a departure therefrom.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to tected by Letters Patent is 1. In a securing attachment for the head of a hat pin,'the combination with a pin provided with an annular groove adjacent its pointed end, of a head plate provided with a conical stem having an outwardly inbe proclined tapering bore therein, a sleeve slidably mounted on said stem, anexpansion spring acting against said sleeve for normally holding the same upwardly pressed relative to the conical stem, an inturned extension carried by the sleeve fitted within the tapering bore of the said stem and slotted to provide spring arms, the said arms being provided with a projecting shoulder for engaging with the annular groove of the hat p1n when inserted within the bore of the conical stem and the sleeve forced upwardly thereon its full distance.
2. In an attachment for securing a head j to the end of a hat pin, the combination with a hat pinpointed at its end and provided adjacent said end with an annular groove, of a head plate provided with a conical stem havingan outwardly inclined,"
g bore, an outwardly projected an-':
taperin nular flange atthe lower end of said stem,
a sleeve provided with an inturned flange at its upper end slidably mounted on saidstem, an expansion spring on the stem confined between the flanged end of the sleeve and the annular flange at the lower end of the stem, a. series of spring arms carried by the spring held sleeve fitted within the bore of the mentioned conical stem, thesaid arms being provided with a shoulder for moving int-o locked engagement with the. annular groove of the hat pin when inserted within the bore of the conical stem and the sleeve forced upwardly thereon its full distance.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence two subscribing witnesses.
