SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 355,342, dated January 4, 1887.

To all whom it i'nay concern.-

Be it known that we, JOHN J. Simmons and FRANK I. MOREAU, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

Our invention relates to an improved looking device in buttons; and .it consists'in the mechanism hereinafter pointed out and claimed. 7

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view of our improved button. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the same, showing the application of the looking device to the article to which the button is attached. Fig. 3 represents the under side of our improved button with the locking device removed. Fig. 4 is a side view of. Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents a side View of the screwthreaded shank and a portion of the locking device. Fig. 6 is a top View of the screwthreaded shank and corrugated head, the same being a top view of Fig. 5. Figs.,. 7, 8, and 9 are views of the locking-washer forming a part of the locking device.

Heretofore buttons have been constructed having a screw-threaded central perforation for receiving a screw-threaded shank or eye, and various devices have been employed for engaging the article to which the button is applied for preventing the screw-threaded eye working loose, and thereby displacing the button.

In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views.

In the drawings, 1 represents the button, which is provided with central perforation, 2, the head of said button being provided with internal screw-threads for receiving the shank, as hereinafter described.

which is provided for ornamentation, and,

may be changed to any other shape, or entirely omitted, leaving the button-head on its upper surface smooth, without departing from Y the spirit of our invention.

\Ve provide on the under side of the head, forming a part thereof, a post, 4, Figs. 2 and 4. On this post we'provide a projection, 5, Figs. 3 and 4, forming a part of the locking device hereinafter described.

\Ve provide shank 6, Fig. 5, having a screw-threaded stem, 7, Fig. 5, for fitting the screw-threaded aperture in the head. On the end of stem 7, Fig. 5, we provide a circular shoe, .8, Figs. 5 and 6, smooth upon one side, with radial depressions 9, Figs. 5 and 6, on the inner surface of the shoe, which forms a part 'of the locking device hereinafter described. We also provide an intermediate lockingrdisk, 10, Figs. 7, 8, and 9, made of metal, with central perforation, 11, Figs. 7 and 9, of sufficient size to fit over stem 7 of the shank. On the upper surface of the disk we provide one or more radial inclined surfaces, 12, Figs. 8 and 9, and upon the lowersurface we provide radial projections 13, Fig. 7, for engaging the radial depressions 9, Fig. 5,- in shank, or rather in the shoe of the shank, forming'a part of the locking device.

\Ve provide the various depressions, pro-- jections, and washer, which, when used to,

gether, constitute what we term a locking device, by means of which the button, when applied to cloth or other analogous articles, is prevented from working loose by means of the friction-points on the post and washer being brought in contact withthe article when the shank is tightened up by means of the screwthreads, as before described.

\Vhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by'Letters Patent, is

1. A separable button consisting of an internally-screw-threaded head and a post having a projection at its lower end, a shoe provided with a screw-stem, and an intermediate 5 locking-disk having a series of inclined planes on its upper face, to hold the projection on the 1 post in locked position, substantially as described.
