INVBNTOR:

UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
STEPHEN J. SVVAYZE, OF SAG HARBOR, NE\V YORK.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,934, dated September 7, 1886.
Application filed May 27, 189.6. Serial No. 203,431. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN J. SWAYZE, of Sag Harbor, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Button, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and practical double-faced button adapted to be attached to the garment withoutstitching, and adapted to be reversed, so that when used on uniformsthe same buttons may be used to indicate off and on duty.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of my new and improved button and a part of a garment to which it is attached, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the head and shank of the but ton separated and without washer and spring.
I construct the head A of the button with two faces, a b, and of two concaved plates, 0 d, of metal or other material, crimped together at their edges, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The plates 0 d are formed with central orifices, c f, to receive the shank B of the button, which is adapted to lock itself in the head A, and is formed or provided with a plate, or rather double plates, 9 h, for securing the button to the garment. The shank B is composed of spriugsections i, formed with shoulders or grooves t, to engage with the edges of the orifices of, and the spring-sections are joined at their outer ends, as shown at i, so that said end will close the orifices e f and finish the outer surface of the button, whichever face is worn outward.
The plates 9 It may be made a part of the springsections, or made separately and secured thereto.
In the form of button shown in Fig. 1 upon the shank B is placed a washer, (J, and coiled spring D, that acts between the plates 9 h and the washer, so that when the button is attached to a garment the head A of the button will be drawn by the action of the spring firmly against the outer surface of the garment and prevented from drooping.
In order to attach the button to a garment, it is only necessary to pass the shank B through an opening in the garment and press the head A upon the shank, when the springsections will cause the shoulders or notches t" to engage with the edges of one of the orifices e or f, (according to which face of the button is turned outward,) and thus lock the button to the garment.
To remove the button, it is only necessary to press the plates 9 it together and disengage the shoulders 1 from the edges of the orifice, when the head and shank may be separated and both detached from the garment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The button herein shown and described, consisting of the double-faced head A, having orifices c f, in combination with the springshank B, provided with plates 9 h, and formed with shoulders or notches i, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with the head A and detachable spring-shank B, of the spring D and washer (J, placed upon the shank, substantially as described.
STEPHEN J. SWAYZE.
