SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 720,515, dated February 10, 1903. Application filed September 22, 1902. Serial No. 124,316. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN ERIKSON, a resident of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.

My invention relates to hair-pins. 1

It is well known that the style of hair-pins now universally used easily and constantly slip out from the wearers hair, occasioning much trouble and annoyance.

The object of my invention is to obviate this trouble by producing a hair-pin which will automatically lock or clamp itself as it is pressed into the hair, also one that will be attractive in appearance and inexpensive to manufacture.

The invention is fully set forth in this speci fication and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which represents a hair-pin with a plurality of laterally-projecting stop-lugs arranged in such a manner as to cause the prongs or legs to spring apart as the pin is inserted in the hair, producing a constant pressure from the natural spring of the legs as the stop-lugs grip the hair, thus automatically locking or clamping the pin in place and preventing it from falling out.

0 C O are projections or stop-lugs which extend out laterally toward the opposite leg and into the space between the two legs. These lugs are arranged alternately, the lugs on one leg projecting into the space between two lugs on the opposite leg.

The construction as shown is particularly adapted to pins made of shell; but other suitable material may be used and any number of lugs employed without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A self clamping or looking hair'pin having two resilient legs, straight on their outside edges, laterally-projecting lugs on each leg extending in toward the opposite leg and into the space between the two legs for the purpose of locking or clamping the hair to hold the pin in. place, substantially as described.

2. A self clamping or looking hair-pin having resilient legs joined together at the top, said legs being straight on their outside edges, a plurality of lugs projecting toward each other from the inner side of the legs into the space between said legs, said lugs alternately disposed so that a lug on one leg shall be opposite the space between two lugs on the opposite leg, for the purpose of clamping the hair and holding the pin in place, substantially as described.

3. A hair-pin, two springy legs joined together at the top, said legs being straight on their outside edges, a plurality of laterallyprojecting lugs arranged to project from the inner side of each leg into the space between the two legs, said lugs alternately disposed so the lugs on one leg shall he opposite the space between two lugs on the opposite leg, for the purpose of clamping the hair and preventing the pin from falling out, substantially as described.
