JAMES BRIGHTER, OF REEDSBURG, WISCONSIN.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,651, dated September 13, 1892.
Application filed May 2'7, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES B. RIGHTER, of Reedsburg, county of Sank, State of Viscousin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the follow ing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a button which may be employed upon ordinary garments for permanent use or may be used where a button is disengaged, as upon a collar or shirt of the wearer.
It consists of two parts adapted to be firmly united together, and its main utility resides in the fact that when once united together the parts are securely locked and prevented from accidental unfastening.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of the two parts of my button in juxtaposition, and Fig. 2 a similar view of the parts united. Fig. 3 is a view of the collar detached, and Fig.4 a view of the same in position.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates the top part of a button, in which is provided a box 2, in the button of which is seated a spring of suitable formas, for instance, spiral 3, or any other form, may be employed. The boX is provided with an opening 4, in the opposite sides of which are slots 5, although one slot may be in some cases sufficient.
6 indicates the bot-tom part of my button, provided integrally or otherwise with a shank '7, as usual. The small end of the shank is preferably T-shaped or provided with a lug or lugs 8, adapted to fit into the slots 5 in the top of the button. It is deemed preferable to employ two lugs; but obviously it would be practicable to use but one. When the lugs Serial No. 434,622. (No model.)
right angles to the slots in the sides of the opening and will enter kerfs 9 on the inner side of the collar 10, which is firmly secured, integrally or otherwise, within the opening in the top of the button. Thereupon the spring will press the lugs firmly into the kerfs and fasten the shanks securely to the top of the button. It is almost impossible to unfas ten the parts, except purposely, when the shank may be firmly pressed against the top of the button and rotated until the lugs are withdrawn from the kerfs in the collar and are brought opposite the slots in the opening, when they can be withdrawn.
What I claim is- In a separable button, the combination, with the head having a collar extending from the upper wall to the bottom thereof, a tube with slotted wall arranged midway of the collar and having a recess at the upper portion thereof at an angle to said slotted part of the same, and a coiled spring located above said tube and in the collar, of a shank having on its upper end a lug, said shank with the lug adapted to be inserted in the slotted tube and rotated so that the lug will be seated in the recess of the tube, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony of all which I have hereunto subscribed my name.
. JAMES B. RIGI'ITER. Witnesses:
G. STEVENS, O. F. SHELDEN.
