AUGUSTUS YOUNG, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT INBUTTONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,543, dated J annary 18, 1876; application filed December 7, 1875.
To all rvhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS YOUNG, 0f the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State ofNew J ersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in ll/Ianufacture of Shirt-Studs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of refer ence marked thereon, which form a part ofthis specification.
This invention relates to that class of studs or buttons the shanks of which are formed of coiled wire 5 and has for its object an improved method of attaching and securing the crownpieces thereto when said crown-pieces are made of enamel or other plastic material.
The nature and character of my invention are fully illustrated in the accompanyin g drawing, in which- Figures 1 and 3 represent the coiled wire prepared to receive the crownpiece or ornament; and Fig. 2 is a view, partially in section, representing said crown-piece or ornament secured in its position, as contemplated in my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists, first, in having the outer end a of the coiled wire to project beyond the discoidal base I), as shown in Figs. 2 and 3; or, in lieu of the solid end a, a hollow or tubular post, a, as shown in Fig. 1, may be substituted therefor, and answer the purpose equally as well, and will be less expensive.
My invention consists, second, in forming the crown A of enamel when in a soft state around the post a or a, and upon the base I), after which it is baked thereon perfectly hard, forming a solid mass, as shown, thereby makin g a very durable article at a trifling expense.
By letting the post project entirely through the enamel a pearl or other additional ornament may be secured or formed thereon. In cutting off the end of the post a or a care need not be taken to have it done smoothly, as, if the end be rough or slightly bent or the edge projecting, it will add to the security of the crown-piece.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,is--
1. The combination of the wire forming the stud-fastening a, discoidal base b, and a pin projecting above the base into the crown, as set forth.
2. The mode described of securing the crowns in the manufacture of shirt-studs by applying the material forming the crown while plastic to a pin projecting above the base 1) into the crown, and then hardening the said material, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix hereto my signature in presence of two witnesses.
I AUGUSTUS YOUNG.
Witnesses OLIVER DRAKE, E. B. COREY.
