n STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL S. SARGEANT, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-ROSETTES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 170,021, dated November 16, 1875; application filed June 17, 1874. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. SARGEANT, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improved Harness-Rosette and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification- Figure 1 being a top view of the rosette; Fig. 2, a transverse section through the center of the rosette; Fig. 3, a view of the parts composing the rosette separate; Figs. 4,5, 6, and 7 views of described modifications of the rosette.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
The rosette is composed of a sheet-metal top piece, A, a sheet-metal back piece, B, a filling, O, placed between the top and back pieces, and a wire loop or shank, D.
The ends a a of the loop 1) are inserted through holes I) b in the back piece B, and then bent down over the inner surface thereof. The filling G then having been placed between the top and back pieces, the edge of the top piece is swaged down around the filling 0, and over the edge of the back piece B, thereby holding all the parts together.
I treat the top or front piece A in various ways for ornamenting the rosette. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, a central aperture, 61, is cut in the plate, showing thereby the surface of the filling O, which I generally or frequently'make of or cover with enameled leather, since the filling may be entirely of leather, enameled or otherwise finished, or the main filling may be of pasteboard or other cheap substance, and the upper surface thereof covered with enameled or other suitably-ornamented leather or material.
Any ornamental figure or form may be cut through the top piece before putting the rosette together, as, for example, the letter S, (shown in Fig. 4;) or the plate may be simply a narrow rim around the edge of the rosette, uncovering nearly the whole surface of the enameled leather, upon which an ornamental letter or other form of ornament may be attached, as seen at f, Fig. 5; or the top piece maybe closed and struck into ornamental form-fiat, convex, or irregularly raised-as,
for example, the convex outline shown in Fig. 6, or the form in steps shown in Fig. 7.
Thus the construction allows a great variety of ornamentation in a simple and inexpensive manner.
What 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a harnessrosette composed of a sheet-metal top or front piece, A, ornamented by perforating or shaping a sheet-metal back piece, B, perforated to
