`Re it known that I, JAMES Macon Don- AnnsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Dodd City, in the county of Fannin and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Hat-Pins, of which the following is a speciiieation.
This invention relates to personal wear and an objectof the invention is to produce a hat pin which will embody means for the protection of humanity against accidental or malicious injury,it;being `well recognized that hat pins that` are nowin common use are injurious to those persons in proximity of the wearer. i
A further object of this invention is to provide a hat pin having novel means for attaching the same to a hat through the action of mechanism applied to a hat and retained thereon while the pin is removable at the will of the user.
.A still further object of this invention is to produce a hat pin and a guard therefor which will prove ornamental, means being provided for securing a head on said pin and in providing novel means for preventing contact of metallic surfaces which might prove disadvantageous i through the noise that would be occasioned by their contact.
` A still further object of this invention is to provide novel means for retaining the hat pin in place, said novel means comprising in part elements adapted to coact with and engage a pin for the purpose of holding it against displacement until the parts are properly manipulated.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a sectional view of fragments of a hat with the invention applied thereto; Fig.` 2 illustrates a sectional view of my invention; Fig. 3 illustrates a view in elevation of a fragment of a pin showing one form of point; Figs. 4: and 5 illustrate similar views showing other forms of points.

associated with the disk 9 and with a hollow` section 11 forming a knob-like end for the pin. The hollow section 11 contains a yielding ring l2 whicheneircles the pin T and it is the object of the inventor that this ring 12 be slightly pressed within the section 11 so that it willproducc suflicient friction to prevent accidental rotation of the head on the pin 7 and the dislodgment or disengagement of the head from the pin.
In order to produce an eye or aperture through which the pin may he inserted, the fragment 13 of the hat is apertured for the reception of a flange 11i formed centrally of the disk 15, the said :flange 14v containing `a bushinglG of rubber or the like to prevent contact `of the pin with the flange 14;, which An ornamental ring 17 is placed on the outer surface of the fragment 13 of the hat and acts as a buffer for the head of the pin when in position or as an ornamental finish of the hat when the said pin is removed. As a means for retaining the pin in place, the opposite side of the hat from that just described is provided with pin engaging members and guards, the same comprising in part two apertured disks 18 and 19, a convexed casing 20 having a flange 21 external of the hat and a casing 22 provided with a central opening 23 formed by the flange 24 internally of the hat, the said flange 24 extending through an aperture in the fragment 25 of the hat and prodzucing an eye for the reception of the pin The flange of the casing 20, the disks 18 and 19 and a flange 26 of the inner easing 22 are secured together by means of fastenings 27 which may be of any appropriate type here shown in the form of rivets.
The pin 7 has, near its end remote fromy the head, an annular groove 2S adapted to receive a fastening for retaining it in posi tion. l
A modification of the pin is shown in Fig. 4 in which said pin is identified by the numeral 32 in which the pin 33 is reduced as compared with the end of the pin shown in Fig. 3 although for all practical purposes a rather blunt point is efficient and preferable.
In Fig.`2, I have shown in detail mechanism for retaining the pin in place. The plate 34; is provided with a guide vriveted or otherwise secured to the plate 84E by the securing means 36. The guide 35 is approximately C-shaped and confines the ring 39 which ring is adapted to enter the annular grooves 28 of the pin when applied thereto, the said ring serving'to retain the pin against displacement owing to the fact that the ring is pressed upwardly into the groove through the action of the spring 40 which bears against the periphery of the disk, and serves to force it normally into the groove. The disk 39 may be displaced from engagement with the pin by means of the operating` lever 4l, which is mounted in a recess or seal a of the guide 35 so that the lever may he manipulated for forcing the ring downward, whereas on releasing` the said lever the spring will serve to force the ring upwardly into the position shown in Fig. 2.
From an inspection of Fig. 2 it will be observed that when the pin 7 is forced into the aperture of the latch, said latch will be moved against the action of the spring 40 until the groove or annular channel 28 of the pin alines with the said latch, at which time the spring 40 will force the latch into the annular groove, thus retaining the against displacement until the handle 41 pin y A device for retaining hat pins, comprising a casing, an apertured plate within the casing, a disk having an aperture therein larger in diameter than theJ diameter oi the pin adapted to register with the aperture in the plate, a spring bearing against the disk and holding it in engagement with the pin to prevent withdrawal of the pin from the casing, an approximately C shaped guide for the disk, said guide having a recess therein forming aseat,a lever having an end tulcrumed in the recess of the guide, said lever hearing against the disk and projecting through the casing for pressing said disk against the action of the spring.
