UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER MCKENZIE, OF ELKHORN, NEBRASKA.
SLEEVE-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,723, dated December 21, 1.886.
Application filed June 4, 1886. Serial No. 204,184. (No model.)
.To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER 1VIOKEN- ZIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhorn, in the county of Douglas and, State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Sleeve-Button, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement in separable sleeve-buttons, the obj eat of the same being to provide a cheap, simple, and durable button that can be easily and quickly applied to and removed from a cuff; and it consists in the parts and combinations of parts, as will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a View in perspective of my improved button, and Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section of the same.
B represents the head of the button, the lower face or bottom, A, of which is depressed or enlarged near or around the center, and is provided centrally with an opening for the passage of the post G of the shoe H, and with a tube, 0, secured to or integral with the inner face of said bottom and extending to the inner face of the front of the head. This tube is 10- cated in a line with the opening in the bottom A of the head, and forms an extended bearing or support for the post when the latter is socured in position to the head. This tube Ois provided at or near its central portion with a transverse slot, D, which latter registers with a corresponding slot, F, in the upper end of the post F when the latter is in position in the tube.
In the side of the head B, at a point in a line with the slot D in the tube 0, an opening is formed for the passage of the pin E, which latter is adapted to removably secure the post to the head. This pin is provided on its upper surface, near its outer end, with the slot J, which latter is adapted to be engaged by the lip K of the head when the pin is forced home, or, that is, when the pin is in engagement with the post G. This pin is prevented from moving too far outwardly by the stop L, formed integral with or secured to the pin E, behind the lip K, and is held in contact with the free edge of the lip K by the spring I, one end of which is secured to the bottom plate, A, of the head B, while the other or free end thereof rests in contact with the lower side of the pin push the pin inwardly. To unlock or separate the parts, the outer end of the pin is depressed until the lip K leaves the slot J, and
then by pulling outwardly on the pin the latter is withdrawn from the post.
It is evidentthat slight changes in the construction might be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I would have it understood that I do not confine myself to the exact construction shown and described, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the head having a centrally-located tube,-the pin having a slotted outer end and passing through one side of the head and tube, the stop for limiting the out ward movement of the pin, and the spring of the shoe, the post of which is provided with an opening for the passage of the pin, substantially as setforth.
ALEXANDER MCKENZIE.
