E. MOORE. HAIR FASTENBR.
No.537,542. r `Inammrtf,Apr.16,1895.
WCnES 555 NTTED STATES EDVIN MOORE, OFBIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
HAIR-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming' part 0f Letters Patent No. 537,542, dated April. 16, 1895.
Application filed November 5, 1894. Serial No. 527,965. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN MOORE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Priory Road, Aston, Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented a new or Improved Hair-Fastenin g, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new or improved fastening for ladies hair.
In the prevailing present -fashion of arranging ladies hair, it iscominon to tie it up at the back by means of cord, tape, or ribbon, which said cord, tape, or ribbon is tied in a knot or knots. This process is very tedious, and usually requires the services of an assistant. In my invention however, I provide a much simpler arrangement, and which can be easily operated by the lady herself. I attain these objects in the manner illustrated in the, accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a View of this my iUVentioinas it appears when opened ready for fixing upon the hair. Fig. 2 shows the invention in its contracted or closed condition.
Similar numbers refer to similar parts throughout both views.
8, is a band or pad which may be silk, velvet, tape, ribbon or other similar suitable material, care being taken that such material shall be chosen that shall not damage or break the hair. Through this pad is now threaded a cord 9, in such a manner that thereby the pad 8, may be contracted or closed at will. This cord is passed round twice, that is, for the greater part there is a double cord. The ends of this cord are now passed through the eyelet or opening lO, which is sewed in the pad. These cords are now threaded through the loop ll, which latteris preferably of metal. An india rubber clip l2, is now provided through which the cords are passed, which by its elasticity clips or binds the said cords. This clip is thus capable of being pushed up close to the ring ll.
Its action is as follows: By first drawing theclip 12 to the end of thecord, as seen in Fig. 1, and then inserting the fingers into the center of the pad, the latter may be opened widely as shown; so that the hair may be placed therein. By now pushing the binding clip 12, along the cord, the ring 1l, is pushed forward and the pad is closed firmly upon the hair and securely held.
What I" claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a hair fastener, the combination with the pad 8, and eyelet opening 10, of the interior double threaded cord 9, and ring l1, and clip l2, substantially as set forth and shown.
EDVIN MOORE.
