. TIE FOR UMBRELLA-RIBS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr.. 23, IQIa.
Application filed .Tune 22, 1916. Serial No. 105,152.V
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM V. MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ties for Umbrella-Ribs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to means for holding the ends of the ribs in close contact with the umbrella rod immediately below the handle and it consists in" a simple and inexpensive device for this purpose which may be readily applied to any ordinary form of umbrella, will not readily become detached therefrom, will securely hold the ribs in place when closed and will not becomeentangled with the ribs or braces of the umbrella in opening the same.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 shows the upper portioniof an umbrella of ordinary design with my invention applied thereto but open or unfastened so that the ribs are free to separate or assume their usual position; Fig. 2 is a similar view but with the tie device closed and maintaining the ribs against the umbrella rod; Fig. 3 is a plan of the tie detached on a somewhat enlarged scale as compared with Figs. 1 and 2; and Fig. 4 is an edge view on a similar scale ofthe detached tie. fr Thebody of the tie is formed of a ribbon 5 of textile or other suitable fabric one end of which 6 is bent back upon the body of the tie to form a loop which is made so small as to pass over the usual ball end 8 of an umbrella rib with diliiculty so that when it is slipped thereon it -will not be accidentally detached. One member 9 of a snap fastener is Ysecured close to the loop and preferably upon the doubled portion of the tie and the other memberY l0 of the snap fastener is secured to the lother end of the tie. W Y
The tie'is applied to any one of the' ribs ofVV an umbrella by simply forcing the 'loop over the ball thereof when thetle is readyfor use. In order to hold the ribs together the tie issimply 'carried about them and the snap catch closed. Various modifications may be resorted to, such as in the material of the tie or the nature of the fastener, without departing from my invention in its broader aspect.
I claim:
An umbrella comprising the usual ribs, and a tie, one end of which is tightly looped about the end of one of the ribs and which is Provided with a snap catch, one of the members of which is attached to one end of the tie and the other member to the other end thereof.
