COMBINED FAN AND EYE-SHADE.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERNEST J. VVILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Fans and Eye-Shads, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a combined fan and eye shade.

The object of th invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive fan andxeye shade which is provided with means whereby it may be securely attached to the brim of a hat so as to lie parallel therewith.

A further object is to provide the handle of the fan with a suitable socket into which may be slipped the shank of a longitudinally extending clip; the free end of the clip extending toward the free end of the handle to permit the entrance of a hat brim thereunder between the clip and the handle.

A further object of the invention is to let the shank of the clip into the handle flush with the surface thereof.

A further object is to form the handle edge of the fan blade on a curve to correspond with the curvature of the hat brim.

These objects I accomplish by the construction shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:

A designates the blade or body of the combined fan and eye shade provided with a suitable handle A. The blade and its handle may be formed of any suitable material, but I prefer some cheap material, such as cardboard,cfor the blade, and wood for the handle. This permits of the printing of advertising and pictorial matter on the blade or body.

The handle edge of the blade A is con caved, as at a, to correspond to the curvature of the brim of a hat B so that it may underli the same from end to end of the blade, as shown in Fig. 1, and present asymmetrical appearance.

The fan may be used as such or it may be attached to the brim of a hat, as shown in Fig. l, where it will form an effective eye shade. The clip may be shaped for brims of different shapes.

Referring to Fig. 5, it will be seen that the clip C is secured directly to the handle by means of suitable fastenings, such as the rivets 0 What I claim is:

l. A combined fan and eye shade comprising, a fan having a handle provided with a socket near one edge and a spring clip provided with a longitudinally extending shank received within said socket; the said clip adapted to clamp the fan fiatwise to the brim of a hat to form an eye shade.

2. A combined fan and eye shade comprising, a fan having a handle provided with a socket in its upper face between its ends, and a spring clip having a shank held in said socket and extending at its free end toward the free end of the handle to clamp the fan to a hat brim parallel therewith.

3. A combined fan and eye shade comprising, a fan havinga curved or concaved edge and a handle secured to the fan at the middle of said concave edge, and a spring clip rigidly secured to the fan at one end and extendin at its free end toward the said concave edge to clamp the fan to a hat brim parallel therewith.

4.. A combined fan and eye shade comprising, a fan having a handle provided with a longitudinal recess in one face, a plate over lying the inner end of said recess to form a socket, and a spring clip having a shank at mail its inner end received in said socket and extending at its free end toward the free end of the handle to clamp the fan to a hat brim parallel therewith.
