OVERSHOE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,998, dated February 20, 1900.

Be it known that I, PRENTISS J. BATOHE- LOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overshoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to the provision upon an overshoe of an adjustable strap through means of which the overshoe may be drawn tightly to the shoe even where such overshoe is larger than the particular shoe it incases.

My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

Figure I is a perspective View of a shoe with an overshoe equipped with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. II is a bottom view of the overshoe, showing the incased shoe therein in dotted lines, illustrating an instance of a shoe of smaller size than the overshoe, in which instance the overshoe is snugly held to the shoe by my attachment.

1 designates the overshoe, which, as seen in Fig. I, is applied to a shoe A.

2 designates a main strap connected at one side to the rear portion of the overshoe. (See dotted lines, Fig. I.) This strap is designed to extend from this side about the rear portion of the overshoe and forwardly therefrom along the other side to its free end, where it it is provided with a buckle 3.

4 designates an adjustment-strap that is located on the toe portion of the overshoe, is adapted to be connected to the buckle 3, and is equipped with an eye 5, adapted to engage a hook 6, secured to the toe portion of the overshoe.

In the use of the combined straps 2 and 4. it will be seen that the said straps may be so adjusted as to increase or diminish their combined length for the purpose of allowing the edge of the overshoe to spread to its greatest extent or to contract the strap side of the said edge inwardly and confine the edge snugly to the incased shoe, as illustrated in Fig. I. tion with the overshoe without the necessity of unfastening the strap 4 from the buckle 3 when the proper adjustment of such strap has been attained by drawing the strap tightly to the overshoe by pulling upon the ad justmentstrap 4: and securing the latter. The strap 2 is arranged in guide-loops 7, that support the said strap in its proper position near the edge of the overshoe, so as to prevent it from slipping up and down thereon away from the desired position at or near the overshoes edge at the position where it serves to draw the edge of the overshoe firmly to the incased shoe.

By the use of the attachment herein described for overshoes I am enabled to cause the overshoe to be held firmly to the shoe incased by it, even though the incased shoe is smaller than the overshoe that protects it, such as is illustrated in Fig. II, where the incased shoe is shown by dotted lines to be considerably smaller than the interior of the overshoe. In such instance the adjustable strap provides for the edge of the overshoe being drawn inwardly tightly and snugly to the shoe, as seen in Fig.1,thereby avoiding the presence of any material opening or crevice between the shoe and overshoe that would otherwise exist where the overshoe was too large to make a proper fit. At the same time the strap serves as an efficient means of holding the overshoe onto the shoe, that would otherwise slip therefrom, owing to the fit being imperfect.

I claim as my invention- 7 The combination, with an overshoe, of the guide-loops secured at one side of the overshoe adjacent to the top edge thereof, the main strap secured at its inner end to the opposite side of the overshoe adjacent to the top edge thereof, extending around the rear part of the overshoe and through the guideloops and provided with a buckle at its outer end, the hook secured to the toe part of the overshoe, and the attachment-strap having an eye at its inner end whereby it is removably connected with the hook, and adapted to engage the buckle at its outer end; substantially as described.
