SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent No. 643,068, dated February 6, 1900.
Application filed December 12, 1899. Serial No. 740,051. (No model.)
To mZZ Ill/7 0777, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT J OSEPH POND, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Norwich, in the county of Norfolk, Eng land, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toe Attachments, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for curing or preventing deformity of human toes; and it has particular relation to an improved appliance of this character which is especially designed for effective use in relation to the deformity commonly known as enlarged great-toe joints or bunions.?
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and improved appliance of the charac-- ter above mentioned which can be conveniently adjusted in position and Worn with safety and comfort and which will effectively serve the office for which it is intended.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a plan View or outline illustrating the attachment of the device to the foot of the user. Fig. 2 is a detail top or plan view of the device. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a side view, and Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view.
' Referring to the drawings, A designates the body-plate, which is extended longitudinally and carries spring loops or clips, which are designed to embrace the toes. The main loop B is provided near the front end of the body A and projects from the lower edge of the latter in curved form, its top being extended inwardly toward the top edge of the body-plate and being provided with an end flange b at an angle to its main portion, which flange is adapted to engage the top edge of the body.
'0 designates a supplementary loop or clip which is carried upon a substantially rigid arm 0, which projects from the bottom edge of the body A at a point in rear of the loop 13, said arm being preferably turned or curved forwardly toward said latter loop, as at t, and its outer end being curved upwardly and inwardly, as at 1', toward said loop 13, and preferably having a spring quality.
In practice the body-plate and the loops or clips which it carries are preferably formed of suitable sheet metal, and the various parts or members are covered or inclosed by chamoisskin orother soft material, as represented at s.
D designates an elastic strap or band forming a securing-loop, which loop projects rearwardly from the device and has its terminal ends respectively connected at the rear end of the body member A, as at d, and to the rear edge of the front loop 13, asat e.
The devices are made rights and lefts, the device shown in the accompanying drawings being a right.
The device adapted for the left foot will correspond exactly to that of the right foot, except that the spring loops or clips will project from the side of the body-plate A opposite to the side at which they are shown projecting in the accompanying drawings, as will be readily understood.
In practice I may vary the number of the spring-loops which are employed, and it is obvious that I may also use any suitable device or arrangement in lieu of the elastic band or strap D to retain the device in proper position when in use.
The operation and advantages of my inventionwill be readily understood. The device is intended to be worn directly against and upon the toe portion of the foot either when shoes are in use or not. It is applied, as illus trated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying draw ings, with the body-plate A in parallel position at the outer side of the great toe and with the main front loop B surrounding the latter, whereby said loop will hold or draw the toe toward and against the body-plate, While said plate will assist in maintaining the toe in the natural position. The supplementary loop or clip 0 has its arm 0 passing under the great toe, While its curved or looped outer portion 2' passes around the second toe and serves to retain the same in straight and proper relative position with relation to the great toe. The general office of the device is to retain the great toe in its normal natural position and clear of the space which should be occupied by the other toes.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A device for attachment to the toes of the human foot, comprising a body-plate adapted to extend in parallel position with relation to the normal position of the great toe and carrying a main loop adapted to encircle the great toe and a supplementary loop projecting to a plane beyond said main loop and adapted to encircle the second toe, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A device for attachment to the toes of the human foot; comprising a body-plate adapted to extend in parallel position with relation to the normal position of the great toe and carrying a main loop projecting from its bottom edge and curving toward the body-plate and adapted to encircle the great toe and a supplementary loop projecting from the bottom edge of said body-plate and extending outwardly to a point beyond the main loop and adapted to encircle the second toe, substan- 2o HERBERT JOSEPH POND Witnesses:
