Description

J. W. GANNON.
GALOSH.
APPLICATION FILED 05c. n. 1916.
Patented Feb. 27, 1917.
JOHN WILLIAM GANNON, OF BROADWAY, MANGAWEKA, NEW ZEALAND.
GALOSH.
Application filed. December 11, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN -WlLLIAM GAN- xox, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Broadway, Mangaweka, New Zealand, have invented new and useful Improvcments in Galoshes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to the ordinary types of galoshes or rubber overshoes which, as hitherto made have not been provided with means for retaining them firmly on the boot, so that when they become stretched they are inclined to get loose and to drop off. As hitherto constructed they are also diIficult to draw on to the boot, as no provision is made for a finger hold to pull the galosh over the boot heel.
The present invention has been devised in order to overcome these objections and to provide means for securely holding the galosh on the boot and also to assist in the pulling of the galosh on to the boot.
The invention consists in providing the galosh with a strap, preferably of suitable elastic material that is adapted to extend around the wearers ankle and to be attached respectively to the back of the galosh and to the top of its upper. To facilitate the attachment of the strap the back edge of the galosh is formed with an upward extension or tab while the front of the upper is elongated. The strap is then attached to these parts by suitable fasteners such as spring dome fastenings, which if desired may be made of ornamental design. The tab extension of the back of the galosh thus serves as a finger hold which may be grasped to draw the galosh over the boot.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the galosh having the improvements thereon.
Fig. 2 is a back elevation, and
Fig. 3 is a front elevation thereof.
The galosh A is made of the usual design but in this invention the top edge of the upper is formed with the tongue extension 13 which serves, in addition to the purposes for which it has been specially designed, to cover the lace openings of a boot on to which the galosh is drawn. The galosh is also formed with the tab extension C extending up from the top of its back edge to any desired height Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Specification of Letters Patent.

so as to provide for an effective hand grip thereon. These extensions B and C may be formed integral with the galosh and of the same material or may be made of any other approved materials and attached to the galosh'in any suitable manner.
D is the strap for securing the galosh on the boot. This may be fixed permanently to the outside of either of the extensions B or C and made, after passing around the ankle on both sides, to fasten to the other extension. Or it may be made wholly detachable as shown in the drawings, and fastened at a point between its ends to the back tab 0. One of its ends is then carried around and across the front extension B, being also fastened thereto, and then secured to the other end. The means for thus securing the strap may be of any suitable design, such as the spring dome fastenings E shown in the drawings. The strap is made of any suitable durable and elastic material so that it will, when in position, tightly encircle the boot ankle and thereby securely hold the galosh upon the boot.
I claim 1. A galosh having a tab extending from the top portion of the upper at the back thereof, a strap secured to said tab and adapted to encircle the ankle of the wearer, and additional means for attaching said strap to the upper of the galosh.
2. A galosh having a tongue extending from the top portion of the upper, a tab extension at the back of the galosh projecting from its top edge, in combination with a strap adapted to encircle the wearers ankle and to be fastened respectively to the front tongue and the rear tab, substantially as specified.
3. A galosh having a tongue extension from the top edge of its upper and a strap adapted to encircle the wearers ankle extending from such tongue and provided with means for its attachment to the back of the galosh, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
onu WILLIAM cannon.
