Be it known that I, vWILLIAM C. Conn, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Canonsburg, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have 'invented new and useful Improvements in Storm Gaiters, of which the following is ak specication. f l

The object of my said invention is the provision of a rubber gaiter constructed with a view to being snugly fastened around the ankle of the wearer and around a shoe as well as around the upper portion of a rubber overshoe with a view to adequately protecting the ankle of the wearer against rain and also with a view to shedding rain water over the overshoe and in that way lessening the liability of the'water reaching the ankle or foot of the wearer.

To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification:-

Figure 1 is a perspective illustrating my novel gaiter as closed and as properly ar` ranged relative to a rubber overshoe.

Figure 2 is a detail elevation showing the forward lower end of the gaiter as closed.

Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective illustrating the preferred closure means of the gaiter. n

Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.

The rubber overshoe 1 is of the usual construction not of my invention and need not, therefore, be described in detail.

My novel gaiter comprises two major sections 2 of soft and pliable vulcanized rubber, a forward central connecting strip 3 of comparatively thin soft and pliable vulcanized rubber, and back fasteners 4 for securing the gaiter in closed state and snugly about the ankle and shoe of the wearer and also snugly about the upper portion of the overshoe 1 so as to effectively guard the mouth or opening in the overshoe 1. The strip 3 is arranged in lapped relation to the sections 2, and is connected to the said sections 2'byadhesive .or other appropriate means, though I prefer for the sake of neatness in appearance to employ adhesive for the purpose. The forward and adjacent edges of the sections 2 are spaced slightly apart as indicated by 5 in Figure 2 so as to contribute to the snugness of iit of the gaiter about the shoe upper and ankle of the ywearer and also about the upper portion of the overshoe 1. At their lower ends the sections 2 are provided with tabs 6, the

said tabs 6 being `Idetachably connectedtof gether by a fastener 4 similarto those before mentioned. The several fasteners 4 are identical construction, and,` therefore,

a detailed description of one fastener 4l will serve to impart a definite understanding of all. Each fastener includes a male member 7 carried by one member of the gaiter and a female member 8` carried by a lapped part of the gaiter, and it will be noted that'a thin `textile strip 9 `is interposed between the body 10 of the male member 7 and the opposed side of the gaiter sections 2; also, that lthe strip 9 is tightly clamped between the bodv 10 and the gaiter section 2 by an enlarged part 11 carried'by the shank of the member 7` and arranged atl the outer side of the gaiter section 2. Each female member 8 is provided with a body 12 arranged at the outer side of a gaiter section 2, and between the said body 12 and the gaiter section 2 is interposed a washer or strip 13 of thin and tough textile material.

The fastenersare yof the spring or snap type so that the exercise of a little stress is necessary to the fastening orlun fastening, and manifestly in virtue of the specific construction described there is no liability of either member of any one of `the fasteners pulling out of or working loose in the rubber section 2 by which the member is carried. y

In virtue of the major portion of my novel gaiter being formed of rubber it will be appreciated that when the gaiter is put under a little tension and is applied to and ing of the overshoe` This latter is due in large measure to the fact that the fastening of the ,gaiter under tension around the upper portion of the overshoe assures a tight fit between the overshoe and the gaiter so that there is practically no liability ofwater or snow finding its way upwardly between the lower portion of the gaiter and the overshoe to the mouth or opening` of the overshoe.

I- preferito detachably connect the tab 6 of the sections 2 in order to facilitate the application of' my novel gaiter to an overshoe and to the ankle of a wearer. I do not desire, however, to be understood as conining myself to the detachable connection of the tabs inasmuch as it is within the purview ofmy invention to provide the gaiter with a continuous stirrup between the lower end portions of the sections 2.

Manifestly inaddition to reenforcing the connection of the female fastener members to the major sections 2, the outer and inner thin andvtough washers of textile material afford convenient finger vheles for use in pulling the female fastener members out of engagement with the male fastener members.

I have entered into afdetailed description of the construction and relative arrange ment of the partsembraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however.y to be understood as confining myself. to the specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various Changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claim.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A gaiter comprising major sections of soft and pliable vulcanized rubber, said sections being arranged with their forward edges spaced apart, a central connecting strip ofeomparatively thin softand pliable rubber connected to the outer sides of the forward edge portions of the major portions and ieXibly connecting said sections together, fasteners carried by the major sections for detachably` connecting in lapped relation the other edge portions thereof, and means on the major sections for holding the .same against upward movement` relative to a shoe.` D
