The present invention relates to retaining devices for gloves and mittens, and consists in the combination and arrangements of elements hereinafter disclosed and particularly set forth in the accompanying claim;

\Vith the usual kinds of gloves and mittens having no buttons or similar securing devices, the Wrist portion must, be Wide enough to permlt the free entry of the hand into the same. As a consequence the gloves fit very loosely around the wrist unless a special device is provided for tightening the wrist portion of the glove above a per sons hand, and the glove is accordingly apt to slip off the hand too easily and will not give much protection against cold. v

The object of my present invention isnow to furnish simple and effective means for retaining the glove on a persons hand and close up tightly around the wrist.

The type of glove herein" disclosed is offered as a further improvement or modifi-- cation over the designs and constructions of gloves disclosed in my two U. S. patents, No. 1,456,580, dated May 29, 1923, and No. 1,493,574, dated May 13, 1924. And in the present instance the construction of the glove is characterized in that the elastic element or band encircling the wrist is securelyv fastened to the glove entirely across the underside of the wrist portion, and is free and adjustable across the upper wrist portration tion, and the advantages of which arrangement are herein further set forth.

The retainingdevice consists of a wrist band 15, preferably of elastic material, secured in any suitable manner as by stitching 16 on the underside of the, wrist portion 12 in such a manner. that wrinkles or shirring is formed as at 17 on the undersideoffthe wrist portion 12. The adjacent edges of the still gauntlet portion or cuff 13, and the overlying palm portion 14 lie in close parallel relation thereby providing a substantially narrow and deep groove in the soft material of the glove which receives the elastic band 15 for tightening about the wrist of the wearer. By this provision the band 15 tightly secures the soft material of the glove entirely about the wrist of the wearer and in such a way that no foreign matter (e. g. dirt) may enter the glove, i. e. find its way between the inner surface of the glove and the hand of the wearer.

The free ends of the wrist band 15 meet at the top and are provided with a buckle or clasp 18 to adjust or further tighten the hold of the band around the wrist. The band is only stitched to the underside of the wrist portion, however, but otherwise free therefrom both at the sides and the top.

It will now be understood that the wearer may be able to'pull on or off the glove without having to open the clasp. The latter is provided for the purpose of adjusting the tension ofthe elastic band according to the size of the wrist, or to take up any slack that may'occur in the band after long use. It is evident that the shirred portion or wrinkles 17 will stretch out and the band 15 expand when the hand is passed through the Wrist portion 12.

It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not accordingly wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claim.

What is claimed as new is:

In a glove of comparatively soft material,

a stiff gauntletrportion attached thereto, a reinforcing-portion of heavy wearing material covering the palm side of the glove and terminating immediately adjacent the wrist portion, thereby leaving a narrow constricted and limp'portion' encircling the wrist be- 7 tween said gauntlet and the edge of the reinforcing portion; a wrist band of elastic I material entirely encircling and lying in 7 close contact with the exterior surface of the limp-wrist portion so as to be entirely visi ble, said wrist band being permanently secured at intervals to the limp palm side of thewrist portion andhaving shirrings or wrinklesbetween the secured portions adapted to. give wheninserting the hand, and a clasp connecting the ends of the band to adjust the width thereof, substantially as set forth. a V
