UNITED STATES PATENT oFHc ALPHOHSE J. BBUGGEMAN, OI MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, AS SIGNOR TO FRIED-DETER- MAN COMPANY, .OF MILWAUKEE, WISCOIVSIN GLOVE Application filed June 5, 1929. Serial Hm 368,598.
This invention relates to improvements in gloves.
One of the objects of my invention is the provision of a removable finger covering for use by aviators and motorists which can be readily placed in position for covering the finger portifns of the glove when found necessary to keep the fingers from becoming 1o chilled, to the extent of numbness during driving in comparatively .low temperatures.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an auxiliary'finger covering adapted to be applied to gloves which are especially useful bymotorists and aviators, which can be retained in an inoperative position so as not to interfere with the hand of the operator and which can be quickly and readily moved into position for enclosing the fin-' gers when it is desired to add more covering or protection to the fingers in accordance with the temperature, or to increase the comfort of the hands of the user. A still further object of the invention is the provision of a fingercoveri, f'the above character which embodies a pdfi t-like member adapted to enclose the fingers and a portion of the hand down-to the thumb part and wherein the fastening elements for retaining the same in position are arranged at one side thereof and so constructed as to quickly and readily fasten the pocket in place or released when desired.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a glove of the above character wherein straps are employed to retain the auxiliary finger covering in an inoperative position so as not'to interfere with the hands of the user and wherein the auxiliary covering can be irectly incorporated in the makeup of the glove so as to form a regular part thereof.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings wherein 2' Figure 1 is a front elevation of a glove constructed in accordance with my invention,
illustrating the auxiliary finger cover in a slightly open position; i
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 22 of Figure 1; and 5 the gloves which are especially adapted for Figure 3 is atransverse section on the line 33 of Figure 1.
In constructing a glove of the above character, I employ the usual hand portion 1 of an ordinary glove having the thumb stall 2 and the usual finger stalls 3. V
In the present instance, the glove is shown of the gauntlet type wherein the gauntlet 4 is sewed onto the body of the glove just outwardly of the thumb stall 2 and is provided on its rear side with the adjusting straps 5 and 6, whereby the gauntlet may be drawn tightly around the forearm of the wearer.
My improvement comprises a pocket-like member 7 having an extended portion 8, the longitudinal-edges of which are sewedto the sides of the body of the glove, as shown at 9, and this same stitching may be utilized for connectingthe side edges of the body. The outer end of the extension 8 extends beneath the inner end of the backside of the gauntlet and is secured by the stitching 10 which is used for attaching the gauntlet to the body of the glove.
The pocket 7 has its edges sewed together with the exception of one side thereof and preferably on the side of the glove adjacent the thumb stall where it is left open so that the pocket may be quickly and readily removed from the finger stalls 3 or applied thereto, as shown in Figure 1.
, The open side of the pocket 7 canbe closed in any suitable manner preferably by removable closure members and in the present instance, I have illustrated a well known type of detachable fastener whereby the edges of the pocket can be quickly and readily drawn together so that the pocket member will fit suitable type of wool lining and the pocket 7 is also provided with a lining12 which may be of wool, felt or other similar material to prevent the penetration of cold as far as possible.
\Vhenthe finger pocket 7 is not in use, it can be folded back and engaged beneath the strap 5 on the back of the gauntlet 4, thus leaving the finger stalls free and the glove can be used as any ordinary type of motorists or ,aviators glove. However, should it be found desirable, the pocket 7 can be quickly disengaged from beneath the strap 5 and positioned over the finger stalls and retained against movement through the medium of the fastening elements 13. It will be apparent that while I have shown and described a particular type of fastener for closing the open side of the pocket, any suitable type of fastener may be used equally as well.
One of the advantages of having the finger pocket formed as disclosed with one side open. is the fact that the pocket can be quickly and readily arranged over the finger stalls without removing the glove from the hand, or can be readily removed from the fingers in the same manner.
stalls and a lateral thumb stall, a gauntlet connected to the .body opposite the finger stalls, a pocket formed with a flexible tab of a width equal to the width of the body and having its end remote from the pocket connected to the connection between the body and gauntlet, said tab having a portion of one longitudinal edge secured to the body at one side thereof, said pocket having one side opened, and means for detachably connecting the edges of the open side whereby the pocket can be positioned over the finger stalls or removed therefrom without withdrawing the fingers of the hand from the stalls. '1
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wiscousin.
ALPHONSE J. BRUGGEMAN.
If the pocket was closed on all sides thereof, it would be necessary to remove the fingers of the hand from the finger stalls, beforev thepocket could be arranged thereoven,
' Another advantage in the construction of a glove of this character is the fact that when the pocket 7 is not in use it can be quickly and readily secured against displacement on the back of the gauntlet so as not to interfere with free use of the fingers of the party using the glove.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be apparent that slight changes maybe made in the construction when putting the invention into practice without departing from the spirit of the same or the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A glove including a body having finger stalls and a lateral thumb stall, a gauntlet connected to the body opposite the finger stallsfa pocket formed with a flexible tab having its end remote from the pocket connected to the connection between the body and gauntlet, said tab having a portion of one longitudinal edge secured tothe body at one side thereof, said pocket having one side opened with means for detachably connecting the edges of the open side whereby the pocket can he.positioned over the finger stalls or removed therefrom without withdrawing the fingers of the hand from the stalls, and adjustable means for retaining the pocket in a folded back position onto the gauntlet when not arranged over the finger stalls.
