Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT EMACK, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Calais, in the county of Washington and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snow-Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in snow-shoes, the primary object of the invention being to provide a generally improved snow-shoe of exceedingly simple, cheap, and efficient construction having its parts so arranged and disposed relative to each other as to provide an improved lightweight snow-shoe having an improved filling and means for tightening and preventing the sag of the latter.

More specifically stated, the invention relates particularly to an improved filling for snow-shoes and means for drawing the latter to and maintaining the same in a taut position as well as improved strut and tie members for cooperating with said filling and tightening means.

lVith the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a top plan view of the improved snow-shoe and also illustrating the manner of drawing the improved filling to a taut position. Fig. 2, an enlarged detached view of the side bow and the tightening strap carried thereby.

Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.

The frame of the improved snow-shoe may comprise the usual light weight wooden frame consisting of a single length of material bent upon itself to form the outline of the snow-shoe including the side bows 1, the latter being suitably connected and secured at their rear as by means of a securing rivet or bolt 1 As a means for bracing or reinforcing the side bows as well as providing a convenient support for the main filling 2, consisting of suitable interlacing thongs 2, of raw-hide or other suit-able material, strut or cross members 3, are interposed between or secured to the side bows 1,

said main filling being connected to the latter through the medium of suitable twisted terminal loop members 2.

The front and rear portions of the snowshoe may be provided with suitable front and rear fillings 4 and 5, respectively, of suitable interlacing thongs or straps, and as a means for reinforcing the side bows 1, as well as preventing the latter from being drawn toward each other by the tension on the main filling 2, while in use, or in drawing the same taut as hereinafter described,a tie member 6, is connected to the rear portions of the side bows at the rear of the rear strut member 3, said tie member 6, preferably comprising interlaced thongs connected to and extending between the side bows 1, and interlaced through the rear filling 5.

As a means for tightening as well as for maintaining the main filling 2, in a tautposition, said main filling is provided along one edge with a twisted marginal strand 7, in proximity to one of the side bows 1, and a securing or lacing strap 8, is secured at one end to the adjacent forward portion of one of the side bows by means of a loop 8*, secured by means of a rivet 9, said strap 8, being laced around the bow of the snow shoe, and through the adjacent loops and about the twisted marginal strand 7 of the main filling member 2, the free end 8 of said strap being adapted to be secured by means of a bucklelO.

WVhen it is desired to tighten or take up any slack in the main filling 2, a marline spike or stick 11, is put under one of the loops ofthe strap with the pointed end thereof engaging in the adjacent marginal portion of'the filling 2, and then by drawing the handle portion of the stick 11, to ward the body of the snow shoe, the slack may be taken out of the strap and the adjacent portion of the filling and the thumb of the left hand may be placed on the loop of the strap thus drawn taut as indicated in the drawing, so that it will not slack off when the stick is withdrawn to be placed in another loop of the strap to repeat the process of lacing, and when the last terminal loop is reached, the free end 8, is made secure through the medium of the buckle 10.

As a means for protecting the tightening strap 8, from wear as well as providing a further gripping surface on the snow, a small raw-hide thong 12, is wound about one of the side bows and between and over the adjacent loops of the lacing strap 8, and fastened at its opposite ends to the side bow.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.

Having thus described one of the embodiments of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,

l. A snow shoe, comprising a frame provided with strut and tie members, a main filling connected to said strut members and one side of said frame, and a lacing strap laced about the opposite side of said frame and the adjacent loops of said main filling.

2. A snow shoe, comprising side bows pro vided with front and rear strut members and a tie member connecting said bows at the rear of said rear strut member, a main filling connected to said strut members, and a securing strap looped about one of said side bows and the adjacent marginal edges of said main filling.

3. In a snow shoe, the combination with a frame provided with front and rear strut members, a tie member at the rear of the rear strut member, and a filling secured to said strut member at the one side of said frame; of a lacing strap secured about the opposite side of said frame and the adjacent marginal portion of said filling.

4. A snow shoe, comprising a frame including side bows, strut members interposed between said side bows, a tie member in cooperative relation to said side bows and strut members, a filling of laced thongs secured to said strut members and one of said bows, and means for tightening and securing said filling to the other side bow.

5. A snow shoe, comprising a frame provided with strut members, a filling of laced thongs secured to said strut members and I one side of said frame, a lacing strap passing about the opposite side of said frame and through the adjacent side of said filling, and means for securing the free end of said lacing strap at the conclusion of the lacing operation.
