ZTOwamZLJZZJJ-ZQ;
HOWARD L. EISSLER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAND-SHIELD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26, 1919.
Application filed January 18, 1919. Serial No. 2711773.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD L. EISSLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Shields, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hand shields, sometimes called hand leathers, which are adapted to be worn on the front of the hand by persons in the handling of rough edged materials such as metal sheets, rods and bars. At present the form of such hand shields most commonly used comprises a fiat, substantially rectangular, piece of leather having a slot near one end through which the hand of the user is passed, and the portion to the rear of the slot forming an integrally connected wrist strap for maintaining the shield in proper relationship to the hand for constant use.
Where such hand shields are used in and around operating machinery, a constant source of danger to the user exists in that, if the hand shield becomes caught in the rolls, gears or other dangerous parts of the machine, and the user is unable to quickly disengage his hand from the shield, he is very likely to become seriously injured and maimed. The object therefore of mypresent invention is to provide an improved form of hand shield, preferably made of leather or other similar material, which is provided with means for attaching the same to the hand of the user, which means are so constructed and arranged as to cause the same to become automatically separated and detached from the users hand when subjected to more than normal strain or pull such as naturally occurs when the shield or leather becomes caught in the machinery, and the user instinctively pulls away therefrom.
The nature and characteristic features of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View, 1llustrating a hand shield embodying the main features of my invention, the same being shown in operative position with relation to the hand of the user;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; and
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same. certain parts being shown in section.
Referring to the drawings, in the particular embodiment of my invention there shown, the hand shield proper comprises a flap of leather or similar material 5, preferably of rectangular outline and of a size slightly larger than a persons hand, and which may, if desired, be corrugated so as to increase its heat resisting qualities when the same is to be used in connection with heated materials. Near one end of the rectangular flap 5, a wrist strap 6 is detachably secured, this strap 6 being adapted to pass over the back of the wrist of the user to hold the otherwise loose flap 5 in proper position with respect to the hand of the user. The wrist strap 6 is connected at each end to the respective rear corners of the flap 5 by means of snap fasteners 7, which may be of any preferred type, but must be of such construction and arrangement that the strap 6 will be maintained connected to flap 5 under normal conditions, but which will permit one end or the other of strap 6 to become automatically detached from the flap .5 whenever undue strain comes thereon.
The snap fasteners commonly used as glove fasteners are well adapted for the present purpose and as the construction of such devices is well known it is not necessary to illustrate and describe the same in detail. The wrist strap 6 is also preferably made in two parts, 8 and 9 connected to each other by means of a buckle 10, of any ordinary type, this arrangement being provided so that the strap 6 may be varied in len th to 'adjust the same to various sizes.
it will thus be seen that there is provided an improved form of hand shield which may be safely employed in and around rolling mills and other places where dangerous machinery is located, and which hand shield is so constructed that should the flap portion of the same become caught in the rolls, gears, or other operating parts of the machines, and the person to whose hand the same is attached instinctively pull away, the wrist strap will become detached at one or both ends and thus enable the user to free himself from an otherwise dangerous predicament. Furthermore, by having the wrist strap 6 variable as to its length the V flexible material adapted to be mounted on' same may be adjusted to suit users hands of different sizes.
Having thus described the nature and characteristic features of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hand shield comprising a flap of flexible material adapted to be mounted on the front of the hand of the user and a wrist strap adapted to pass over the b ack of the hand, each end of said Wrist strap being connected to said flap by means of a separable snap fastener whereby one or bothends of said strap will automatically become detached when more than normal strain comes thereon. V v
2. A hand shield comprising a flap of the front of the hand of the user and a. wrist strap adapted to pass over the back of the hand, each end of said wrist strap, being connected to said flap by means of a separable snap fastener whereby one or both ends of said strap will automatically become detached when more than normal strain comes thereon, said strap being so constructed and arranged as to be varied in length.
'3. A hand shield comprising a flap of flexible material adapted to be mounted on the front of the hand of the user and ,a-w-rist strap adapted to pass over the back of the hand, each end of said wrist strap being connected to said flap by means of .a separable snap fastener whereby one, or both endsof said strap, will automatically become detached when more than normal strain comes thereon, said strap being made in two parts connected by a buckle to enable said strap to be varied: in len th.
"In testimony whereoi I have hereunto signed my name. V
