BREAST SHIELD OR ARMOR.

Ink/ENTERS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. MILLET AND JOHN F. ROGERS, OF ROOKLAND, MASS.
BREAST SHIELD OR ARIVIOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,307, dated August 9, 1881.
Application filed March 21, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, GHARLEs S. MILLE'L and JOHN F. ROGERS, citizens of the United States, both residing at Rockland, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful YVorkmans Breast- Shield, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to that class of shields which are used by workingmen to wear upon the person for the purpose of resting the article being worked upon or held against; and it consists in forming a strong firm case, more or less rigid, for the outer partot' this device, and in combining with the same an elastic lining to rest more directly against the person, and thus distribute the pressure in such a manner that it will relieve the user and secure him against injury that is liable to occur from constant pressure on a limited area of the person.
In the drawings. Figure 1 is a perspective view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
The outer or rigid part of our device consists of a firm and strong piece of wood, hard rubber, or metal, or any combinations of the same, formed substantially as shown, so as to provide, first, a proper working-surface, A-that is, a surface for being pressed against by the article Worked upon or held-and side parts or braces, A A the function of which is to form as'upport for the edges of the yielding elastic lining C G 0 This elastic yielding lining G G C may be fastened to the rigid parts by means of tacks, screws, stitching, or cement.
D D D D are convenient ears or eyebolts for the purpose of connecting this shield to the person, which may be done by any suitable lashings.
If desirable, perforations b b b may be made in the parts A A for allowing free passage of air into or out of the interior of the shield, for the purpose of allowing the elastic part 0 C. C to act more freely in distributing the pressure, also to relieve the shield of any tendency to heat the person wearing it.
\Ve are aware that pads more or less thick have been worn, in connect-ion with aprons, for the purpose of protecting the person of the wearer; but heretofore these devices were of but little use, as they did not serve to distribute a great pressure exerted on a limited area of the shield itself to a great area on the per son. In our device a pressure of one hundred pounds might be exerted upon a single inch of the shield, and then transferred to the clastic part 0 O (J over the entire person covered by the shield. Thus the pressure will become so distributed as to be harmless to the person wearing the same.
We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, the'following:
In a workmans breast-shield, the combination of the rigid form A A A with the elastic lining O 0 0 substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
Witness our hands this 15th day of March, A. D. 1881.
CHARLES S. MILLET. JOHN F. RQGERS.
