Description

(No Model.)
. J. AHLSTROM. COMBINED EYE SHADE AND-HEAD SHIELD.
No. 452,155. Patented May 12, 1891.
Fig. 3.
IINVENTEIR= W Jemalymv/ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JENNY AHLSTROM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED EYE-SHADE AND HEAD-SHIELD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,l55, dated May 12, 1891.
Application filed November 28,1890. Serial No. 372,952. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JENNY AHLSTROM, a citizen of Sweden, andaresident of New York city, county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Eye and Head Shield, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a combined eye and head shield or screen for protecting both the eyes and the head of cooks and other workers over a fire from the effects thereof, which said shield or guard comprises a yoke adapted to the shape of the forehead directly over the eyes and having an elastic or other band extending around the back of the head to secure the yoke in position, from which yoke there is one fore piece extending downward suitably for protecting the eyes from the heat without obstructing the vision too much, and there is another fore piece projecting upward in like manner for protecting the head as well, said upwardly-proj ectiug fore piece being inclined forward upwardly about the same as the downwardly-proj ectin g fore piece is, or a little more, for suitable air-space between it and the head for effectual protection, all as hereinafter fully described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved shield. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the shield and a profile of the head of the wearer, and Fig. 3 is a central section of the shield from front to back in a modified form.
The yoke a may consist of abow, of any approved material adapted for the support of the other parts, comprising the downwardly projecting fore piece I) for shielding the eyes and the upwardly-projecting fore piece 0 for protecting the head, said bow being shaped to the form of the forehead directly over the eyes and extending to or back of the position of the temples and having the ends connected with an elastic or other approved band (Z for binding it on the head of the wearer, so as to keep its place. It may have a lining of soft material, if desired. I
The fore piecesmaybeof card-board,leather, or other approved material, and may be fastened in any approved way, or they may be made in one piece without the yoke, as in Fig. 3.
I am aware that an eye-guard consisting of a downwardly-projecting fore piece and a band for fastening it on the head has been used, but believe that such device has never been made with the upwardly-projecting fore piece for the protection of the head, which my experience as a cook has shown me to be equally if not more important than the eyeshield, and which, together with said eyeguard, provides an article of great advantage and importance to all persons working over fires, especially cooks.
I claim- The combined eye and head shield comprising the fastening-baud, downwardly-projecting eye-piece, and upwardly and forwardly projecting head-piece, all constructed and arranged substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have-signed myname, in presence of two witnesses, this 6th day of N ovember, 1890.
JENNY AHLSTROM.
