Be it known that JOSEPH SUTTON, a citizen-of the United States, residing at lValla Valle, in the county of WValla lValla and State of Washington, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eye Proteeters, of which the following is a specification. a

This inventionrelates to eye protectors, such as workmen and others use, and has as one of its objects to provide an eye protector that may be placed at any angle before the eyes, thus being of great value where fiyi'ng particles may endanger the eyes.

Another object of the invention is to provide an eye protector that may easily be removed from before the eyes and yet be available for instant use.

A further object of the invention is to provide an eye protector whereby the eye pieces may be instantly renewed in case of breakage and whereby eye pieces of various colors may be substituted readily and with ease.

A further object of the invention is to provide an eye protector that may be readily attached to a head cover so that there is no weight upon the nose.

Having reference to the drawings like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views and thenumeral 1 refers to a head cover which may be a cap as shown in Fig. 1 or a hat as shown in Fig. 11.

The protector is more particularly adapted to caps, they having VlSOIS generally of a rigid nature, they being worn mostly in the class of work for which the protector is intended, caps being available, at a low price, at any general merchandise store, and caps being unobjectionable even' among professional people who may be compelled to use powerful glasses in their work; but provisions, are made however, to apply the device to a hat to afford an opportunity of using the device wherever it is needed.

The protector consists of a base 2 to which is hingedly attached an eye piece plate 3,

the .two forming a hinged frame,and the lat 1 ter hinged to the base by means of a pin 4.- twisted into an elongated spiral 5, the outer edges of the spiral being designed to frictionally engage the interior wall 6 of the tube 7 which forms the female portion of the hinge, thus providing means to maintain the eye piece plate and the eye pieces in any position desired by the wearer.

The pin is'exte'nded as at 8 and passes through clips 9 on the base 2 to complete the hinge and then continues with bends 10 to fit the visor 11 of the cap, finally terminating in a hook 12 which when brought over the edge 13 ofthe visor. will engage the projecting end: 8 of the friction pin 4 to secure the protector to the head cover.

Thus by raising thespring the eye piece may be instantly removed and another readily attached to the eye piece plate. I

The base 2, as used on the hat may be curved, or straight as shown in Fig. 14, and is provided with orifices 27 through which the. ends 28 of the friction pin a pass to be secured on top of the rim 29 of the hat by a bar 30-bent as shown in Fig. 12 to prevent a rotating movement which i might eventually permit the bar to work loose from the loops 31 of the fastening means. Where a rim is very soft and flexible a plate 32 is provided having a raised rim 33 attached to it, and which extending partly around the crown of the hat may be secured thereto by a strap 34: or elastic. By this means absolute rigidity is obtained.

With the above description a further description of its uses is deemed unnecessary and therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In an eye piece protector, thecombination with a head cover, of a base having a broad bearing surface and provided wlth a. hinge portion on its ends, an eye piece plate extended transversely to form a shield;

provided with a hinge portion, and further provided with a pair of grooves for slidably receiving a pair of eye pieces, a yielding member attached to said eye piece plate for removably and slidably securing said eye pieces in said grooves, and a friction pin engaging the hinge portions of said .base and eye piece plate to form a friction hinge therewith, said friction pin having an extended portion for securing the protector to the visor of said headcover. 4 In testimony whereof JosErH SUI'JJON affixes his signature.
