To all-whome'tmaycmwemt:
Be it known that I, Lnoronnll l Aiisnnha citizen of the UnitedjStatea-and a, resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county,
a j 5 and TStateof New'York,li-ave invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Hat Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement 1 in hat boxes and is particularly directed to means for securing a hat in place therein. One of the objects of my invention is the provision of means for attaching a hat to a hat box and for securely holding the same 7 l in place whereby the hat will notbe injured by striking against the box.
Another object of my invention is the pro- 1 vision of such a securing or attaching means which is capable of adjustment to accommodatehats' of various sizes.
A further object of my invention resides in the novel manner of securing. the strap to the bag whereby a swinging or lateral movement of the hat in the bag is eliminated.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an improved hinge for the box togetherwith novel means for securing the same in place. 1
' Other objects of my invention will be-manifest from the following description and the accompanying drawings wherein I have illustrated an embodiment of my invention, in which drawings- I i Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat box embodying my invention;
Fig. 2,,is a perspective view of the strap of my invention; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a link or buckle which comprises the adjusting means for the strap.
.My improved box comprises a bottom 1.
l .a side wall 2, a flat end 3, a hinged cover 5,
and a handle 6 which is provided at the end of the boxopposite the fiat end, the fiat end 3 permitting the box to stand upright on the ground with the handle in proper position for raising the box when desired.
A strap 7 of any suitable flexible material, such as cretone, leather, oil-cloth, and the like, is provided within the box. The ends of this strap are each passed through a link or buckle 8, as shown in Fig. 2, the link being shownin plan in Fig. 3. When the link has been thus placed upon the strap, the ends HAT- d the strap: aresecuredto bottom or side lofthe box adjacentthe handleendthereof Q at 9, by fstitching or in 1 any 7 other suitable manner; The strap is securedto the handle side of the .box orto the bottom ofthe box adjacent the handle so that a hat held'by the .strap will be suspended from that side of the box when the box is being carried as well as when it is at rest standing on the flat end 3. i
It will be noted that the points 9-9, where the ends of the strap are secured to the box, are remote from each other. The purpose of so separating the ends of the strap is to provide two points of suspension:
so that swinging or lateral movement of the hatin the box will be eliminated.
'When a hat is placed in the box it is laid it 5 A neatienmed. au ust 11,, 1924... Seder N... ;+e1,eee1.,,j 1
upon the bottom 1 thereof and the loop formedin the strap 7 placed around the crown of the hat. The'link 8 is then movedv The cover 5 is secured to the body of the box by an improved hinge, comprising two flexlble straps, preferably leather, designated 10 and 11, respectively. One end of each} strap is attached to the flange 12 of the cover by means of a headed rivet or fastener 13. The other-end is secured to the body of the box by similar members 14. I prefer also to sew the straps to the box to provide a neat appearing hinge. The box and cover are more or less segmental in plan, being H provided with a rear flattened portion 15,
on which the box stands or rests when not in use. The heads 16 on the fastening members 13 and 14 afford rests or feet on which the box stands, thereby spacing the box slightly from the ground to prevent wear on the material of the box.
What I claim is:
1. In combination, a hat box, a strap, both ends of which are secured to the interior of the box to form a loop, and a link on said attached to the interior of the box adjacent the point of attachment of the handle to the box fowsuspending a hat in the box, said suspending means being adjustable to -ac---- ,oommodatehats of Va1101 l,SlZ8S.
3.111 combination, a hat box havingcurved sides and a fiat end, a handle attached to the curved side of the box opposite 1oop,-and"a member slidable along said strap for varying the size of said loop to adjust-the strap to hats of varioussizes.
4. A hat box or the like, segmental in plan and vcom-prising a body and a cover, each having a flattened portion or surface providing a surface for retaining the box intan -.upright position, a hingeflfor .the cover comprising a plurality of flexible straps, headed securing means 'for attaching these straps to the body and cover at the flattened portions thereof, said securing means havingheads projecting beyond the surface of the box and cover exteriorly thereof and serving to provide a rest for the box when in upright position.
This specification signed this 8th day of August, 1924.
