PROTECTOR 0R GOGGLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 26, 1912.
Application filed May 20, 1911. Serial No. 628,480.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES W. LnAsUnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradford, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protectors or Goggles, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in goggles or protectors designed not only to shield the eyesfrom the wind and dust, but also to exclude the latter from the lungs.
Among the objects of the invention are to provide an article which shall fully protect the eyes and yet give a Wide range of vision without being unsightly, which shall protect both the eyes and nostrils from dust, smoke, flying sand and the like; which may be worn indefinitely without inducing perspiration or other discomfort; which shall be sanitary in use, economical of production and capable of being assembled in a sullicient quantity in compact form so that a requisite number may be carried in an automobile to enable all the passengers or guests to be supplied therewith.
The invention includes the novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the appended claim.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
a which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the goggle as in use, and Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Referring by reference characters to this drawing, the numeral 1 designates a sheet of flexible transparent material such as celluloid, the edges of which are provided with a binding 2 preferably of soft leather secured in place by stitching, as indicated at 3. The upper portion 2 is designed to bear against the forehead while the binding of the lower edge 2 rests upon the nose near the tip thereof.
The sheet of transparent material is of sufficient width to extend completely over and around both eyes and it is held in place upon the head by elastic securing members or bands l connected by branched tapes or connections 5 to the bindings 2 at the sides of the transparent sheet. In order to protect the nostrils a piece of material 6 of very fine mesh is provided at the lower edge of the device which piece is preferably of closely woven silk and has the edge 6 which is secured to the lower binding 2 out on the arc of a circle. This tends to hold the transparent sheet in a curve approximately fitting the face of the wearer, and causes the silk piece or strip to lie in a horizontal plane under the nose of the wearer and bearing against the upper lip. I prefer to make the dust filtering material detachable so that it may be removed and replaced.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
A guard or protector of the character described comprising a single rectangular sheet of flexible material bent into curved form, a piece or strip of dust filtering mate rial having a curved edge connected with the lower edge of said sheet and lying in a plane to which said sheet is perpendicular, and means for holding the device in place upon the face of the wearer with the free edge of said shield pressed against the upper lip below the nostrils.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
