Description
July 29, 1941. H. s. BAKER SAFETY GLOVE Filed Sept. 8, 1939 A iiomeys l /gm/q fimwd n Bake and Patented July 29, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE SAFETY GLOVE Harold Snowden Baker, Maybeury, W. Va.
Application September 8, 1939, Serial No. 294,009
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a safety glove, the general object of the invention being to make that portion of the glove which covers the major portion of the hand and the wrist, of front and rear portions which are connected. together at the edges by snap fasteners so that if the hand is caught in machinery, etc., either one or both sides of the glove will be pulled open so that the operator can free his hand from the machinery and thus escape injury.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective View of the improved glove with the parts in fastened position.
Figure 2 is a similar view but with the parts unfastened and the rear portion raised well above the front portion.
In this drawing the letter A indicates a glove which may be of the ordinary or any suitable construction and in carrying out the invention I make the part of the glove extending from the finger end of the palm in two parts I and 2 which are separated at the side edges of the glove and these parts are detachably connected together by the snap fasteners 3. These fasteners are of such construction that they will firmly hold the two parts of the glove together with the hand in the glove during ordinary operations and uses but if a part of the glove should be caught in machinery which would tend to pull the glove and the hand into the machinery the strain would release either one side or both sides of the connected portions of the two parts I and 2 and this would enable the user to jerk his hand from out of the glove. I prefer to have the snap fasteners at the thumb side of the glove extend to the free ends of the parts I and 2 while at the other side of the snap fasteners terminate a distance from said free end so as to leave an opening at one side of the gauntlet part of the glove.
I prefer to reinforce the back of the glove across the knuckles by a reinforcing strip 4 and in rear of this strip 4 I place a strip 5 of elastic which is only connected with the glove at the ends thereof which are sewn to the side edges of the part I and this strip 5, when the fasteners are undone will tend to move the side edges of the part I toward each other which facilitate the quick releasing of the hand from the glove.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the claimed as new is:
1. A safety glove for releasing the hand if the glove is caught in machinery comprising a finger part and front and rear portions, said glove having openings in its side edges extending from the finger portions through the rear of the glove and separating said rear portion from the front portion and separable snap fasteners for connecting the edges of the back portion to the side edges of the front portion, whereby one or both side edges of the back portion will be automatically separated from the side edges of the front portion when more than normal strain comes on the glove.
2. A safety glove for releasing the hand if the glove is caught in machinery comprising a finger part and front and rear portions, said glove having openings in its side edges extending from the finger portions through the rear of the glove and separating said rear portion from the front portion and separable snap fasteners for connecting the edges of the back portion to the side edges of the front portion, whereby one or both side edges of the back portion will be automatically separated from the side edges of the front portion when more than normal strain comes on the glove, and an elastic strap extending transversely across the rear portion and connected with the side edges thereof for moving said side edges toward each other when the rear portion of the glove is separated from the front portion thereof.
