Description

July 25, 1950 M. K. MULHERAN GLOVE Filed July 13, 1948 IN V EN TOR. ZZAfRJOR/E KMUL HERA/V BY I Patented July 25, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GLOVE i Marjorie K. Mulheran, Sandusky, Ohio Application July 13, 1948, Serial No.'38,415 2 Claims. (Cl. 2159) The purpose of my present invention has been to provide improvements in gloves for ladies and misses, primarily, though my improvements as to certain phases thereof are not confined strictly to ladies wear.
One of the problems with which I deal is the difiiculty of persons whose fingers have been deformed by disease such as rheumatism or arthritis, in putting on ordinary forms of gloves in which the hand introducing opening is largely at the wrist portion of the glove. Frequently a person, whose fingers have been deformed so that they remain in bent or angular jointed position, is unable to apply a glove to a hand without extreme difiiculty due to the fact that the fingers are not straight. Having this in mind, I have devised my glove construction so that the outer side of the glove where the outer seam is usually located may be opened from the wrist, or through the cuff portion of the glove, all the way down to a point opposite the base or inner end or the little finger cot, so that, practically speaking, the main body of the glove can be spread apart at said outer side with a view to facilitating the introduction of the fingers of the hand, whether deformed or not, into the finger cots of the glove body. For closing said openable portion of the side of the glove, I preferably utilize a hookless fastener of the sliding type in order to afford a neatness of appearance and a mode of quick opening and closing of the glove, not heretofore attained in this manner.
Still another object of my invention has to do with provisions associated with the hookless fastening means whereby an ornament or weight member may be attached to the finger piece by which the runner of the fastener is operated, for normally tending to hold the said finger piece in locking position.
Additionally, the means for attaching said ornament or weight member has a dual function, in that it not only forms such attachment facility, but involves an open hook part connected to said finger piece, whereby when two gloves are equipped with such hook parts, they may be interlocked by means of such hooks and liability of loss of one glove, when no means of attaching two gloves together are available, will be avoided.
An understanding of my invention will be had more fully upon reference to the following detail description of the construction and advantages thereof, in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, and in the latter:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a glove embodying the essential features of my invention in 86 respect to the fastening means for opening and closing the glove for introducing and removing the hand, respectively.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the cull or wrist portions of the two gloves, illustrating somewhat more clearly the manner in which such gloves may be connected by the detachable fastening-means which are carried by the finger pieces or handle members for the runners of the hookless fasteners used on both gloves.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, there i depicted in this figure a ladies glove which may be made, of course, of many difierent kinds of material, including lace, kid, cloth, or the like. The glove shown is one primarily for dress wear, and for this reason may be equiped with an ornament feature which may conform or correspond with earrings or other ornaments or jewelry worn by the wearer of the glove.
In the drawings the body of a glove involving my invention is generally designated at A and the thumb stall or out is denoted l, the little finger cot is denoted 2, and the remaining finger cots are designated 3. It will be seen that where the usual outer side seam of the glove is ordinarily provided, in my glove construction I employ at such seam portion of the glove the common form of hookless fastener 4, which fastener extends from the side of the glove opposite the inner end of the little finger cot 2, to the wrist portion of the glove, enabling the glove to be opened and closed at this portion of the same. It is found that the hookless fastener l aifords a desirable appearance of the glove when arranged as illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings primarily, and it is very easy to manipulate the fastener in order to open the glove very wide all the way down to the finger section of the same for the purpose of facilitating the placing of the glove on hands where fingers are deformed.
As stated before, the hookless fastener 4 may be of a conventional type utilizing the customary runner 5 for effecting the closing and opening of the fastening means, said runner being provided with the finger or handle piece 6 adapted to be grasped for in turn manipulating the runner 5 to effect the sliding opening and closing movements Of the latter. The member 8 is ordinarily provided with a small slot 1 at its outer end, and I take advantage of this fact by applying to each of the finger pieces 6 an attachable hook connector generally designated at B and comprising the reversely arranged hooks i connected by the intermediate shank 9. The books I are spring 3 hooks and maintain a, spring contact therefore with the shank portion 9 aforesaid, but the outer ends of the hooks curve outwardly and enable parts to be connected with the hooks to be sl p between said outer ends and the shank, as will now be seen on reference to the drawings.
' The hook members B of the mating gloves A are employed for the primary purpose of enabling these gloves to be temporarily connected with one or both gloves may be removed from the hand or hands, so that the person wearing the glove may not misplace the single glove when removed and if the gloves are both taken oil the hands, they will be connected together by the members B and there is no liability of their becoming separated and one lost. Of course, if one of a pair of gloves is lost, usually this means the loss of the use of both gloves, as will be readily appreciated.
But, in addition to the function of the hook devices B as connector means between gloves, it will be seen from the drawings that I may support on these hook devices the ornament or weight members l0 having links I I connected thereto by which to interlock these members it with their respective hook members B. As the glove is worn the weight members l0 have a tendency to lock the manipulating finger pieces 6 to their downward locking position, these members 6 being provided with lock portions l2 adjacent to their pivots by which they are connected to the members I.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that if the weight members III are made of an ornamental nature, they are readily detachable from the members B and other such members may be substituted for the members III. In this way, matching ornament features or costume jewelry items may be utilized as the weight members In and may be interchangeable to match earrings or other jewelry worn on the person using the glove.
While the glove is particularly useful for the the purpose of enabling persons with crippled fingers to pull the glove on easily, it will also be seen that because the outer seam can be opened all the way from the cull. or wrist portion to the base 01' the little finger cot, the glove construetion is very advantageous to all persons because it may be pulled on without the usual necessity for easing each finger into the glove individually. This does away with the attendant soiling and wear of the glove by such ordinary method. The above is also true in regard to removal of the glove, as it is possible, by merely grasping the finger or handle piece 5, to remove the glove without touching the glove itself.
Having thus described by invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In combination, a pair of gloves having respective slide fastener mechanisms including a runner carried by each glove, and a hooklike clasp carried by each of said runners, said clasps being mutually engageable to maintain said pair of gloves as a unit.
2. The combination as set forth in claim 1, wherein each of said hooklike clasps comprises a resilient strip reversely bent to form two loops having oppositely disposed entrance sections, one of said loops being secured to a respective run her, and a finger piece secured to the other oi said loops.
