Patented May 12, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFKIE GLOVE Karl E. Jensen,
assignments, to Indus Danville, Ill., assignor, by mesne trial Gloves Corporation,
Claims.
The invention relates generally to gloves and more particularly to reinforced gloves of the type which are especially adapted for use in industries wherein rough, heavy and sharp articles, such as castings and the like, are handled.
In gloves of this nature, it has been found that the crotch or juncture between a digit receiving stall and the remaining portion of the glove, and more particularly between the thumb stall and the palm portion of the glove, is subject to great Wear and that frequently the glove must be discarded because it is worn out at this point, although the rest of the glove may still be in relatively good condition. An object of the present invention is to provide a novel means for reinforcing a glove at this point.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for reinforcing the juncture between the thumb stall and the opposed palm portion of the glove, which means may be readily detached so that it may be replaced, when worn, by a new reinforcing means.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following description and from the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a view of the palm face of a glove embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the index finger and thumb portion of the glove.
Fig. 3 shows a detached reinforcing means for the crotch.
While the invention is susceptible of various modifications and alternative constructions, I have shown in the drawing and will herein describe in detail the preferred embodiment, but
' it is to be understood that I do not thereby intend to limit the invention to the specific form disclosed, but intend to cover all modifications and alternative constructions falling within the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
While the present invention may be embodied in practically any type of glove construction in which there is at least one digit receiving stall, it is herein shown for illustrative purposes in connection with a glove constructed in substantial accordance with that disclosed in my Patent No. 1,929,385, issued October 3, 1933. The glove comprises generally a hand protecting covering ID of suitable construction having a gauntlet l I, individual finger stalls l2, and a thumb stall [3. A reinforcing means l4 in the form of a sheet of material fashioned to cover the palm portion of the glove and to provide flaps l5 extending along the finger stalls is permanently secured to the body of the covering in any suitable manner, as
by a large number of metal staples. The thumb stall may be reinforced by a suitable patch l5 and by a flap H which is formed when the palm portion of the glove is cut to provide the opening through the covering for the thumb. A strip of reinforcing material i8 is preferably permanently secured to extend from the front or palm face of the glove, across the crotch between the thumb stall and the opposed palm portion, and to the rear side of the glove.
The reinforcing strip l8 strengthens the crotch portion of the glove but in use this portion is subject to unusually heavy strains and injury which causes the glove to wear out quite rapidly at this point. According to the present invention this disadvantage is overcome by providing an elongated reinforcement IQ of wear resisting material which is of substantial width and is dimensioned to extend from the front side of the glove across the crotch of the thumb stall to the rear side of the glove. At each end, the reinforcement carries one part of a snap fastener 20, the cooperating parts being appropriately located upon the front and rear sides of the glove. Preferably the reinforcement is of sufiicient length so that the snap fasteners may be disposed in an out of the way position approximately on the wrist line of the glove. If desired, the reinforcement may be of restricted width, as shown at 2| (Fig. 3) throughout that portion thereof which extends through the crotch to avoid an excess of material at this point and to provide a pair of lobes designed to afford similar protection near each side of the crotch.
The reinforcement is preferably constructed of any suitable wear resisting material, such as leather, rubber or the like, and may carry a plurality of closely grouped metallic staples for increasing the wear resisting characteristics thereof.
It will be evident from the foregoing that an improved glove embodying a novel wear resisting feature has been provided which will increase the life of a heavy duty glove materially. The detachable reinforcement l9 extends across that part of the glove which is subject to excessive wear and strain and substantially prevents this part of the glove from being damaged. When the reinforcing strip is worn out, it may be removed and replaced by a new strip.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a glove, the combination of a protective covering having a hand portion and a stall for a digit extending therefrom, a reinforcing member extending across the crotch between said hand portion and said stall, and means near the opposite ends of said member for detachably securing said member to the covering in crotch reinforcing position to permit replacement of said member when worn.
2. In a glove, the combination of a protective covering having a hand portion and a thumb stall extending therefrom, and a reinforcing strip detachably secured to the front and back sides of said covering to extend across the juncture between said thumb stall and said hand portion, said strip having areas of substantial width adapted to afford protection on opposite sides of said juncture and being of reduced width through the portion which occupies a position immediately between said thumb stall and hand covering.
3. In a glove, the combination of a protective covering having a hand portion and a thumb stall extending therefrom, a flexible reinforcing strip detachably secured to the front and back sides of said covering to' extend across the juncture between said thumb stall and said hand portion, the surface of said strip being treated for increasing the wear resisting characteristics thereof, and readily detachable securing means near the opposite ends of said strip enabling the strip to be replaced when worn without affecting the body of the glove. I
4. In a glove, the combination of a protective covering having a hand portion and a stall for a digit extending therefrom, and a detachable reinforcing member comprising a pair of lobes integrally joined by a portion of reduced area and extending across the crotch between said hand portion and stall with said portion of reduced area occupying a position immediately between said stall and said hand portion, whereby similar protection is afiorded at opposite sides of said crotch without an excess of material in the crotch.
5. In a glove, the combination of a protective covering having a hand portion and a thumb stall extending therefrom, a flexible reinforcing strip extending across the juncture between said thumb stall and said hand portion, and fasteners near the opposite ends of the strip for detachably securing the strip in place on opposite sides of the juncture and permitting quick removal and replacement of the strip when worn without affecting the body of the glove.
