PAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Application filed October 28, 1919. Serial No. 333,866.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. BEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottsville, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pads, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to pads, gloves or the like and has for its object the provision of a pad or glove that is adapted for use by iron riveters or other persons engaged in work where it is desired to protect the hand of the wearer from burns or other injury while engaged in work where such protection is necessary.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pad or glove, that is inexpensive and easy to produce and is yet capable of rough usage.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a workmans mitt or pad from a small amount of material and the production therefrom of a mitt or pad that may be quickly and easily removed; one that will f not prevent free usage and skilled movement of the hand, and one that may be placed on the right or left hand with equal facility.
The invention in all of its details will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a riveters pad or mitt constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2, is a section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a longitudinal section of the pad.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation, illustrating a portion of the pad, and
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the thumb piece of the pad.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The body portion of my novel pad, is formed of a single flat piece of leather or other tough wear resisting material and said piece of material is stitched as indicated by 2 to form a pocket or casing for the fingers 3 as shown in Fig. 1.
As clearly illustrated in Fig. 4, I cut an opening in the inner or palm portion of the body l. The material 5 that is removed from the body l to form the opening 4 is cut so as to reduce the same slightly less than the circumference of the said opening 4.
On the inner 0r palm side of the body 1 I sew or otherwise attach a reinforcing strip or pad 6 of leather or other suitable wear resisting material and in the preferred embodiment of the vinvention the strip 6 eX- tends around and is stitched or otherwise secured to the back of the body 1 as indicated by 7 in Figs. 2 or 3. As clearly appears in Fig. 5, the thumb portion 8 of the pad is formed of a single piece of leather or other suitable wear resisting` material; the said thumb being stitched from its inner upper end 9 to its outer lower end 10.
This thumb piece 8 is then stitched or otherwise secured over the opening 4 and to the body portion 1.
In order to reinforce the thumb and add to its ability to resist heat and wear, the material 5 is stitched or otherwise secured to the thumb at its inner side.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that the pad when constructed in the manner illustrated, is convenient to use and may be worn on either hand and at the same time will not only enable the wearer to u se his hands with skill, but will also prevent burning or other injury to the hands.
Moreover, because of its construction, the
- glove may be quickly repaired by replacing the portions 5 and 6 which naturally receive all wear due to heat. etc; and thus the life' of the glove is greatly increased.
I would distinctly have it understood that the body portion 1 may be extended so as to cover the arm of a user of my device as far up as the elbow. Moreover, I may employ rivets or other fastening means in lieu of stitching in order to secure the pad and thumb piece to the body portion 1.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is In a glove for the purpose set forth, the combination of a single piece of leather or other suitable material having its ends stitched together to form a palm and finger encircling casing, a reinforcing piece of suitable material sewed on the casing and extending transversely from a point in a plane approximate the center of the casing to a 10 said thumb portion being formed of a portion of material that is removed to form the aperture in the Casing.
In'testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence'of two subscribing wit nesses.
ANDREW J. BEAN.
